I TAKE A LOT OF PRIDE IN WHAT I AM

as sung by Merle Haggard

Things I learned in a hobo jungle

Are things they never taught me in a classroom

Like where to find the hand-outs

While thumbinı through Chicago in the afternoon

Hey, Iım not bragginı or complaininı,

Iım just talkinı to myself Œman-to-manı

This old mental fat Iım chewinı didnıt take a lot of doinı

I take a lot of pride in what I am

I guess I grew up a loner,

Donıt remember ever havinı any folks around

But I keep thumbinı through the phone books,

And lookinı for my daddyıs name in every town

And I meet lots of friendly people,

But I always wind up leavinı on the lam

Hey, where Iıve been and where Iım goinı didnıt take a lot of knowinı

But I take a lot of pride in what I am

I never travel in a hurry,

ŒCause I got nobody waitinı for me anywhere

Home is anywhere Iım livinı,

If itıs sleepinı on some vacant bench in city square

Or if Iım workinı on some road gang,

Or just livinı off the fat of our great land

Iıve never been nobodyıs idol, but at least I got a title,

And I take a lot of pride in what I am

Iıve never been nobodyıs idol, but at least I got a title,

And I take a lot of pride in what I am

Yeah, I take a lot of pride in what I am

I AIN'T BROKE.....

as sung by Ricky Scaggs

I'm goin' back to the country

I can't pay the rent

No I'm not completely broke

But brother, I'm badly bent

I can't understand

Where the money went

Well I ain't broke, but brother I'm badly bent

INSTRUMENTAL

When I get back to the country

I'll be livin' in a tent

Maw and Paw will sure be mad

About all the money I spent

I can't understand

Where my money went

Well I ain't broke, but brother I'm badly bent

INSTRUMENTAL

Well I had a lot of money

But to the city I went

I met too many good looking girls

And that's where my money went

Now I know

Just where it went

Well I ain't broke, but brother I'm badly bent

If Walls Could Talk
(Bobby Miller)

Well, if things could talk then I'm sure you'd hear

A lot of things to make you cry my dear

Ain't you glad [Ain't you glad], o-o-oh, ain't you glad [Ain't you glad]

Ain't you glad [Glad], glad that things don't talk

Now, if shoes could tell where they've been
When you say you've been visiting a friend
Ain't you glad [Ain't you glad], hey-hey-hey, ain't you glad [Ain't you glad]
Well ain't you glad [Glad], glad that shoes don't talk

Now, if doors could tell who's turned the knob

When he's away out on the job

If cars could tell who's been inside

And who's been taking you out for a ride

Ain't you glad [Ain't you glad], o-o-oh, ain't you glad [Ain't you glad]

Now ain't you glad [Glad], glad that cars don't talk

BREAK

(BRIDGE)

In a world of trouble I'd be if things had talked on me,

My whole life would be through, 'cause I'm guiltyŠ how about you?

If things had talked that way, ain't no telling what they might say

Ain't you glad [Ain't you glad], o-o-oh, ain't you glad [Ain't you glad]

Ain't you glad [Glad], glad that things don't talk

IıLL BE YOUR BABY TONIGHT

Bob Dylan

Close your eyes, close the door,

You don't have to worry any moreŠ.

I'll be your baby tonight

Shut the light, shut the shade,
You don't have to be afraidŠ..
I'll be your baby tonight

BRIDGE:

Well, that mockingbird's gonna sail away,

We're gonna forget it

That big fat moon is gonna shine like a spoon, butŠ

We're gonna let it,

You won't regret itŠ.

Kick your shoes off, do not fear,
Bring that bottle over hereŠ..
I'll be your baby tonight

IıM A GOOD OLD REBEL

Ry Cooder version

(C-Am, C-Am, etc.)

Now Iım a good old rebel, now thatıs just what I am

And for this land of freedom I do not give a damn

Iım glad I fought against it... I only wish weıd won

And I donıt want no pardon for anything Iıve done

I hates the Yankee nation and everything they do

I hates the Declaration of Independence too

I hates the glorious union....ıtis driven with our blood

And I hates the striped banner, I fought it all I could

BREAK

Three hundred thousand Yankees are stiff in Southern dust

We got three hundred thousand before they conquered us

They died of Southern fever, and Southern steel and shot

And I wish it was three million instead of what we got

I wonıt be reconstructed, Iım better now than then

And for that Carpetbagger, I donıt give a damn

So Iım off for the frontier... soon as I can go

Iıll prepare a weapon and start for Mexico

Words by Major Innes Randolph, CSA, to the tune of ³Joe Bowers²

Note that about 10 REALLY obnoxious verses are omitted (crap about joining the KKK, etc.)

Irene, Goodnight

Leadbelly

CHORUS:

Irene, goodnight,

Irene, goodnight,

Goodnight, Irene, goodnight, Irene,

Iıll see you in my dreams

Sometimes I live in the country,

Sometimes I live in town,

Sometimes I take a great notion

To jump in the river and drown

CHORUS:

Last Saturday night I got married,

Me and my wife settled down

Now me and my wife are parted,

Iım gonna take another stroll downtown

CHORUS:

Stop ramblinı, stop your gamblinı,

Stop stayinı out late at night

Go home to your wife and family

Stay there by your fireside bright

CHORUS:- Twice

I SHALL BE RELEASED

Bob Dylan

They say everything can be replaced

They say every distance is not near

So I remember every face

Of every man who put me here

CHORUS:

I see my light come shining from the west down to the east

Any day now, any day now, I shall be released

They say every man needs protection

They say that every man must fall

Yet I swear I see my reflection

Somewhere so high above this wall

CHORUS

BREAK:   Marty harmonica (on verse melody)

Down here next to me in this lonely crowd

Is a man who swears heıs not to blame

All day long I hear him cry so loud

Callinı out that he was framed

CHORUS

CODA: Any day now, any day now, I shall be released

I WAS LEFT ON THE STREET

Bill Monroe?Šas sung by Peter Rowan

The policeman whistled gaily, a smile upon his face

As he walked along the old familiar beat

He saw a little boy a-cryin', as though his heart would break

Standing barefoot in the middle of the street

CHORUS

I was left on the street with no shoes upon my feet

When I saw my Mom and Daddy drive away

Now I'm not old enough to know very much myself

But I saw my Dad and Mommy drive away

The policeman stopped the traffic, and he went up to the boy

He asked him gently, "Where do you belong?"

The little boy stopped crying, and with trembling lips he said,

"I'm not big enough to know just what went wrong"

CHORUS

BREAK:       Marty/Stan on verse melody

The little boy is happy now, with a new Mom and a Dad,

His new Daddy is the policeman on the beat

Though he can't forget that awful day, it doesn't seem to hurt so bad,

He has a brand new pair of shoes upon his feet

CHORUS

I STILL MISS SOMEONE

Johnny Cash

At my door the leaves are falling

A cold wild wind will come

Sweethearts walk by together

And I still miss someone

CHORUS:

Oh, I never got over those blue eyes

I see them everywhere

I miss those arms that held me

When all the love was there

I wonder if sheıs sorry

For leavinı what weıd begun

Thereıs someone for me somewhere

And I still miss someone

CHORUS

Repeat Verse 2

I HEARD THE LONESOME WHISTLE BLOW

Hank Williams (as sung by Nashville Bluegrass Band)

I was ridinı Number Nine, headinı south from Caroline,

I heard that lo-o-nesome whistle blow

Got in trouble, I had to roam, left my darlinı, I left my home,

I heard the lo-o-o-nesome whistle blow

Just a kid, actinı smart, I went and broke my darlingıs heart

I guess I was too young to know

They took me off the Georgia Main, locked me to a ball and chain

I heard the lo-o-o-nesome whistle blow

All alone I bear the shame, Iım a number not a name

I heard the lo-o-nesome whistle blow

All I do is set and cry, and watch that eveninı train go by

I heard the Lo-o-o-nesome whistle blow

Iıll be locked here in this cell Œtil my bodyıs just a shell

And my hair turns whiter than the snow

Iıll never see that gal of mine, Iım in Georgia doinı time

I heard the lo-o-o-nesome whistle blow

I SAW YOUR FACE IN THE MOON

(as sung by Roland White)

Instrumental intro.-

I saw your face in the moon, honey

You threw a smile my way

You pretended that you were happy,

But in those lovinı eyes I could see

You were having blue thoughts of bygoneŠ

Days you and I once knew

I could see your smile, as it faded in the blue,

When I saw your face in the moon, honey,

When I saw your face in the moon

INSTRUMENTAL BREAK

Itıs Raining Here This Morning

As sung by Blake and Rice

Oh, itıs raining, raining, raining here this morning

As I sit in jail and hang my head in shame

With a smile I try to greet each early dawning,

But theyıve given me a number for my name

Many little raindrops are fallinı close to me,

Makes all the streams and rivers as muddy as can be

Oh, itıs raining, raining, raining here this morning

As the Mississippi flows on to the sea

How I wish that I could see my little darling

And hold her in my arms as before

I use to tell her every day I loved her

But now she doesnıt love me anymore

She knew that I was guiltless of this one crime

And she said sheıd be waiting there for me

But she has found somewhere else to wander

Where the Mississippi flows on to the sea

Oh, itıs raining, raining, raining here this morning

And Iım just as weary as can be

I wish that I could follow all the raindrops

Down the Mississippi toward the silver sea

But thereıs no way to prove that Iım not guilty

So Iıll have to suffer all this shame

Go and tell her for me little raindrops

That theyıve given me a number for my name

IF I SHOULD WANDER BACK TONIGHT

(as sung by Roland White)

Instrumental intro.-

For many years Iıve been a rolling stone, my darling

Like a gypsy I have roamed from place to place

Fortune never came to me, but how happy I would be

Just to look again upon your smiling face

CHORUS

If I should wander back tonight would you be waiting

Would your eyes be filled with loveıs own tender light

Would your arms be empty, dear, would you thrill to find me near

Would you love me if Iıd wander back tonight

INSTRU.

Last night I dreamed that you and I were back together

As I held your hand so gently in my own

I heard you say weıd never part, as I pressed you to my heart

Then I woke in tears to find myself alone

CHORUS

If I should wander back tonight would you be waiting

Would your eyes be filled with loveıs own tender light

Would your arms be empty, dear, would you thrill to find me near

Would you love me if Iıd wander back tonight

IıM WITH YOU IN MY DREAMS

(Adie Grey)

I leave a light on when youıre gone

I sleep on your side of the bed

When Iım sleepinı alone

But Iım with you in my dreams

I wear the robe you always wear

I curl up with my book

In your old comfortable chair

And Iım with you in my dreams

BRIDGE:

I keep your picture next to me

So itıs the last thing that I see

ŒTil I sleepŠ..and magically

Iım in your arms again

I listen to our favorite song

And as I drift away

I can hear you singinı along

And Iım with you in my dreams

BREAK (Albert Lee, then violin)

BRIDGE:

When I dream my dreams of you

I do as other dreamers do

And pray this time my dreams come true

And I wake up in your arms

I make a wish upon a star,

I close my eyes and try to beŠwherever you are,

And Iım with you in my dreams

Iım with you in my dreams

(TAG) I leave a light on when youıre goneŠ.

IıLL FOLLOW THE SUN

It Ainıt The Money

Adie Grey

Some think that money is the root of all evil- Iım not sayinı I disagree,

But if I got to tell the truth people, that kinda bad looks pretty good to me

It ainıt so much the money I want, itıs just those things that money can buy

Fur coats, Cadillacs, diamond ringsŠ.mansions in the sky

If people think Iım greedy, and I want more than my share

Iıll just sit up in my great big house and make believe I care, ŒcauseŠ.

It ainıt so much the money I want, itıs just those things that money can buy

Now it ainıt so much that I want to be rich, itıs just that I donıt want to be poor

Iıd like to try a bit of easy livinı- then Iıd like a whole lot more

If some folks say Iım stuck up, if they criticize my style,

I will hop into a brand new car, and cruise off with a smile, causeŠ.

It ainıt so much that I want to be rich, itıs just that I donıt want to be poor

BREAK

It ainıt so much the money I want, itıs just those things that money can buy

Well I know it ainıt healthy to get too wealthy, but I just ainıt afraid to die

If someone calls me balmy, if they say I got no class,

Iıll have my lawyer tell Œem for me, ³Now, yıall can kiss my cash²,

It aintı so much the money I want, itıs just those things that money can buy

If people say that show-offıs got more than she deserves

Iıll just take a trip around the world, and get Œem off my nerves

Because the great thing about money, when youıve got some of your own,

If you canıt make people love you, you can make Œem leave you Œlone

Now it ainıt so much the money I want, itıs just those things that money can buyŠ..I meanŠ

Itıs just those little things that money can buy

I AM A PILGRIM

(as sung by Kentucky Colonels)

I CANıT HELP IT

Hank Williams

Today I passed you on the street,

Somebody else stood by your side,

And he looked so satisfied

I canıt help it if Iım still in love with you

John Riley

as Sung by Bill Vanaver

As I went walking, one Sunday morning

To breathe the cool and pleasant air

Who should I spy but a fair young maiden

Whose cheek was like the lilly fair

I stepped up to her, and quickly saying,

³Would you like to be a sailorıs wife?²

³Oh no, kind sir, Iıd rather tarry,

And to live single all my life²

³The truth, kind sir, Iıll plainly tell you,

I couldıve been married three years ago

To one John Riley, I canıt forget him,

Though heıs been the cause of all my woe²

And when he saw that she loved him truly,

He gave her kisses, one, two, and three,

Saying, ³I am Riley, your long lost lover,

Whoıs been the cause of all misery!²

³If ye be he, and your name is Riley,

I will go with you to that distant shore,

We shall set sail for Pennsylvanie,

Adieu, young friends, for evermore!²

JAILBIRDS

                                                                                                John Gorka

They built a prison by the freeway...just to rub it in

It's a gentle reminder of the wages of sin

And the ones on the inside...are being paid their share

There's a hundred stories for every man in there

There's marks on the cell walls...there's marks on the men

One counts off the time lost.... the other counts till the end

CHORUS:

Jailbirds in the big house, jailbirds in the sky

Singin' out their innocence...they'll sing by and by

Jailbirds in the big house, jailbirds on the street

Some of them could've looked like you, some of them used to look like me

Teddy was a bad kid....from a bad family tree

He was voted most likely to commit a felony

And that was just in grade school....after then he disappeared

They say he moved or he dropped out, and has faded with the years

A red hand in the cookie jar...a foot in Potter's field

His face was waitin' for a number...his fate was aching to be sealed

CHORUS:

And Teddy had a girlfriend....who gave him a place to stay

Then he left with a TV set and a baby on the way

And if you should run across him...he could shorten your life

With the butt of a pistol...or the edge of a knife

They sing a song at the rockpile...mournin' all he had

All the luck in all the world....and most of it was bad

CHORUS:

JUST A CLOSER WALK

Just a closer walk with thee

Grant it Jesus, if you please

Daily walking close to thee

Let it be, dear Lord, let it be

I am weak, but Thou art strong

Jesus, keep me from all wrong

I'll be satisfied as long

As I walk, let me walk, close to Thee

REPEAT FIRST VERSE

JESSE JAMES

as sung by Jack Elliott

When Jesse James was a lad, he killed many a man

He robbed the Glendale train

And many miles away, the people all did say

It was robbed by Frank and Jesse James

CHORUS:

Jesse had a wife to mourn for his life

            Three children, they were brave

That dirty little coward that shot Mr. Howard

Has laid Jesse James in his grave

It was Robert Ford, that dirty little coward

I wonder how he does feel

For he ate of Jesse's bread and he slept in Jesse's bed

And he laid Jesse James in his grave

CHORUS

It was on a Saturday night, Jesse was at home

A-talkin' to his family brave

Robert Ford come along, like a thief in the night,

And he laid Jesse James in his grave

CHORUS

And the people held their breath when they heard about his death

And they wondered how he ever came to die

It was one of the gang called little Robert Ford

Who shot Jesse James on the sly

CHORUS

This song was made by Billy Gashade

As soon as the news did arrive

He said there was no man with the law in his hand

That could take Jesse James when alive

CHORUS

JIM JONES

as sung by Bob Dylan

Come and listen for a moment, lads, and hear me tell my tale

How across the sea from England I was condemned to sail

Oh, the jury found me guilty, then says the judge, says he,

³Oh, for life, Jim Jones, Iım sending you across the stormy sea

But take a tip before you ship to join the iron gangŠ

Donıt get too gay in Botany Bay or else youıll surely hang,

Or else youıll surely hang², says he, ³and after that, Jim Jones,

Itıs high up on the gallows tree, the crows will pick your bones!²

BREAK

Now, our ship was high upon the sea when pirates came along

But the soldiers on our convict ship were full 500 strong

Oh, they opened fire and somehow drove that pirate ship away

Well, Iıd rather have joined that pirate band than gone to Botany Bay

With the storms raginı Œround us and the winds a-blowingı gales

Iıd rather have drowned in misery than gone to New South Wales

³Thereıs no time for mischief there,² they say, ³remember that,² says they,

³Oh, theyıll flog the poachinı out of you down there in Botany Bay²

BREAK

Now itıs day and night the irons clang and lock for galley slaves

We toil and toil and when we die, must fill dishonored graves

But itıs by and by Iıll slip my chains, into the bush Iıll go

And Iıll join the bravest rangers there, Jack Donohue and Co.

And some dark night when everything is silent in the town

Iıll shoot those tyrants one and all, Iıll gun the floggers down

Oh, Iıll give the law no little shock, remember what I say

Oh, theyıll yet regret theyıve sent Jim Jones in chains to Botany Bay!

John Hardy

as sung by K. Trio

John Hardy was a fightinı man

Carried a razor every day

He killed a man in Mobile town

You ought to see John Hardy gettinı away

Ought to see John Hardy gettinı away

BREAK

John Hardy had a pretty little gal,

Kept her dressed in blue

He saw her in the hanginı ground

Crying, ³Johnny-boy, Iıll be true to you-

Johnny-boy, Iıll be true to you²

BREAK

John Hardy was a fightinı man

Carried a razor every day

He killed a man in Mobile town

You ought to see John Hardy gettinı away

Ought to see John Hardy gettinı away

BREAK

Iıve been to the east and Iıve been to the west

Been this whole world Œround

Iıve been to the river, and Iıve been baptized

Take me to my buryinı ground

CHORUS

So, fare thee well, my own true love,

And when I return united we will be

Itıs not the leavinı of Liverpool that grieves me,

But my darlinı when I think of thee

I have shipped out on a Yankee sailing ship

³Davy Crockett² is her name

And Burgess is the captain of her

And they say she is a floatinı Hell

CHORUS

Oh, the sun is on the harbour, love

And I wish I could remain

For I know it will be some long, long time

Before I see you again

CHORUS

Louis Collins
by Mississippi John Hurt

Mrs. Collins weeped, Mrs. Collins moaned,
to see her son Louis leavin' home
The angels laid him away

The angels laid him away,
they laid him six feet under the clay
The angels laid him away

Oh, Bob shot once and Louis shot too,
shot poor Collins, shot him through and through
The angels laid him away

Oh, kind friends, now, ain't it hard?,
to see poor Louis in a new graveyard
The angels laid him away

The angels laid him away,
they laid him six feet under the clay
The angels laid him away

Oh, when they heard that Louis was dead
all the people they dressed in red
The angels laid him away

The angels laid him away,
they laid him six feet under the clay
The angels laid him away

Mrs. Collins weeped, Mrs. Collins moaned,
to see her son Louis leavin' home
The angels laid him away

The angels laid him away,
they laid him six feet under the clay
The angels laid him away

Note: According to Hurt this song, his own composition, was based on a true episode

Lily of the West

Traditional, as sung by Joan Baez

When first I came to Louisville, some pleasure there to find,

A damsel there from Lexington was pleasing to my mind,

Her rosy cheeks, her ruby lips, like arrows pierced my breast,

And the name she bore was Flora, the lily of the west

I courted lovely Flora, some pleasure there to find

But she turned unto another man, which sore distressed my mind

She robbed me of my liberty, deprived me of my rest,

Then go, my lovely Flora, the lily of the west

Way down in yonder shady grove, a man of high degree,

Conversing with my Flora there, which seemed so strange to me

And the answers that she gave to him, sore did me opress

I was betrayed by Flora, the lily of the west

I stepped up to my rival, my dagger in my hand

I seized him by the collar and I boldly bade him stand

Being mad by desperation, I pierced him through the breast

I killed a man for Flora, the lily of the west

Then I had to stand my trial, I had to make my plea,

They placed me in the prisonerıs box and then commenced on me

Although she swore my life away, deprived me of my rest,

Still I loved my faithless Flora, the lily of the west

LYIN' EYES

                                                                                                            The Eagles

City girls just seem to find out early

How to open doors with just a smile

A rich old man...she won't have to worry

Sheıll dress all up in lace and go in style

But late at night the big old house gets lonely

I guess every form of refuge has its price

And it breaks her heart to think her love is only

Given to a man with hands as cold as ice

So she tells him she must go out for the evening

To comfort an old friend who's feelin' down

But he knows where she's goin' as she's leaving

She's headed for the cheatin' side of town

CHORUS:

You can't hide your lyin' eyes

And your smile is a thin disguise

            Thought by now you'd realize

There ain't no way to hide your lyin' eyes

On the other side of town a boy is waiting

With fiery eyes and dreams no one can steal

She drives on through the night anticipating

'Cause he makes her feel the way she used to feel

She rushes to his arms, they fall together

She whispers that it's only for a while

And she swears that soon she'll be comin' back forever

She pulls away and leaves him with a smile

CHORUS:

She gets up and pours herself a strong one

She stares out at the stars up in the sky

Another night, it's gonna be a long one

She draws the shades and hangs her head and cries

And she wonders how it ever got this crazy

She thinks about a boy she knew in school

Did she get tired, or did she just get lazy

She's so far gone, she feels just like a fool

My oh my, you sure know how to arrange things

You set it up so well, so carefully

Ain't it funny how your new life didn't change things

You're still the same old girl you used to be

CHORUS:

Land of the Navajo

Peter Rowan

A hundred miles from nowhere, out on the desert sand

One-eyed Jack the trader held some turquoise in his hand

By his side sat Running Elk, his long-time Indian friend

He swore that he would stay by Jack until the bitter end

Jack had gambled everything he owned to lead this wanderinı life

He mightıve had a happy home and a tender, loving wife

But his hunger was for trading trapperıs furs for turquoise stones

Anything that the Indians had, Jack wanted for his own

CHORUS:

Oh, the wind blows cold, on the trail of the buffalo

Oh, the wind blows cold, in the land of the Navajo

In the land of the Navajo

Said Jack to Running Elk, ³Iıll gamble all my precious stones,

Before I leave my body here among these bleachinı bones

But now my time is coming near Iım filled with dark regret

My spirit longs to journey, as the sun begins to set

We raped and killed, we stole your land, we ruled with guns and knives

Fed whiskey to your warriors while we stole away your wives²

Said Running Elk, ³Whatıs done is done, you white men ruled this land,

So lay your cards face up and play your last broken-hearted hand²

CHORUS:

When youıre dealing cards with death, the jokerıs wild, the ace is high

Jack bet the Mississippi River, Running Elk raised him the sky

He saw him with the sun and moon, and upped him with the stars

Running Elk bet the Rocky Mountains, Jupiter and Mars

The sun was sinking in the west when Jack drew the Ace of Spades

Running Elk just smiled and rolled his eyes and passed away

Jack picked up his turquoise stones and cast them to the sky

He stared into the setting sun, and made a mournful cry

CHORUS:

(Em to D lots of times for break)

Long Black Veil

The Band (and others)

Ten years ago on a cold, dark night

There was someone killed Œneath the town hall light

There were few at the scene, but they all did agree

That the slayer who ran looked a lot like me

CHORUS:

She walks these hill in a long black veil

She visits my grave when the night winds wail

Nobody knows, nobody sees,

Nobody knows but me

The judge said, ³Son, what is your alibi-

If you were somewhere else, then you wonıt have to die²

I spoke not a word, though it meant my life

For Iıd been in the arms of my best friendıs wife

CHORUS:

The scaffold was high, and eternity near

She stood in the crowd and she shed not a tear

But sometimes at night when the cold winds moan

In a long, black veil she cries oıer my bones

CHORUS:

LINCOLN DUNCAN

Paul Simon

INTRO.:       Bruce- 4 beats/Steve- 4 beats/Stan-4 beats

Couple in the next room...... bound to win a prize,

Theyıve been going at it all night long

And Iım trying to get some sleep, but these motel walls are cheap,

Lincoln Duncan is my name and hereıs my song..... hereıs my song

My father was a fisherman, mother was a fishermanıs friend,

And I was born in the boredom and the chowder

And when I reached my prime, I left my home in the maritimes,

And headed down the turnpike to New England...... sweet New England

Aaaaaaaaaaaaah............aaaaah, hey, hey, hey (X2)

Holes in my confidence, holes in the knees of my jeans,

I was left without a penny in my pocket

Oooooo-ooo-eee, Iıs about as destitute as a kid could be,

And I wish I wore a ring so I could hock it... Iıd like to hock it

A young girl in the parking lot, preaching to the crowd,

Singing sacred songs and reading from the Bible,

I told her I was lost, and she told me all about the Pentecost,

And I seen that girl as the road to my survi...iiii...val

Aaaaaaaaaaaaah............aaaaah, hey, hey, hey (X2)

Later on the very same night, I crept to her tent with a flashlight,

And my long years of innocence ended

She took me to the woods, saying, ³Here comes something and it feels so good²,

And just like a dog I was befriended...... I was befriended

Ooooh what a night, what a garden of delight,

Even now that sweet memory lingers

I was playing my guitar, underneath the stars,

Just thanking the Lord for my fingers......... for my fingers

Aaaaaaaaaaaaah............aaaaah, hey, hey, hey (X2)

MONEY, HONEY

as sung by Ry Cooder

Well, the landlord rang the front door bell,

Let it ring for a long, long spell

Went to the window, peeked through the blinds,

Asked him to tell me what was on his mindŠ.and he said,

CHORUS:

³Money, honeyŠ..money, honey

Money, honeyŠ..if you want to stay here with me!²

Well, I was cleaned and screened, and so hard-pressed,

I called the woman that I loved the best,

Finally found my baby Œbout a quarter-to-three,

She said, ³Iıd like to know what you want with me?!²Šand I said,

CHORUS:

³Money, honeyŠ..money, honey

Money, honeyŠ..if you want to get along with me!²

Well, she screamed and said, ³Whatıs wrong with you?!Š

From this day forth, our romance is through!²

I said, ³Tell me, baby, face-to-face,

How could another man take my place??²Šand she said,

CHORUS:

³Money, honeyŠ..money, honey

Money, honeyŠ..if you want to get along with me!²

Now, I learned my lesson, and now I know,

Sun may shine, wind may blow,

Women may come and women may go,

But before I tell Œem that I love Œem soŠ..I want

CHORUS:

³Money, honeyŠ..money, honey

Money, honeyŠ..if you want to get along with me!²

MR. TAMBOURINE MAN

Bob Dylan

CHORUS:

Hey Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me

I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm goin' to

Hey Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me

In the jingle-jangle mornin' I'll come following you

Oh I know that evening's empire has returned into sand

Vanished from my hand- left me blindly here to stand

            but still not sleeping

My weariness amazes me, I'm branded on my feet

I have no one to meet- and the ancient empty street's

            too dead for dreamin'

CHORUS:

Take me for a trip upon your magic swirling ship

My senses have been stripped- my hands can't seem to grip

My toes too numb to stand, wait only for my bootheels

            to be wandering

I'm ready to go anywhere- I'm ready for to fade

Into my own parade- cast your dancin' spell my way

            I promise to go wandering

CHORUS:

Though you might hear laughing, spinning, swinging madly

            across the sun

It's not aimed at anyone- it's just escaping on the run

And but for the sky there are no fences facing

And if you hear vague traces of skipping reels of rhyme

To your tambourine in time- it's just a ragged clown behind

I wouldn't pay him any mind

It's just a shadow you're seeing that he's chasing

CHORUS:

And take me disappearing through the smoke rings of my mind

Down the foggy ruins of time, out past the frozen leaves-

            the haunted frightened trees

Out to the windy beach- far from the twisted reach

            of crazy sorrow

Yes to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free

Silhouetted by the sea- circled by the circus signs

With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves

Let me forget about today until tomorrow

CHORUS:

MIDNIGHT MOONLIGHT

Peter Rowan

Did you ever feel lonesome

And you're down in San Antone

Beg, steal, or borrow two nickels or a dime

And call me on the phone

I'll meet you at Alamo Mission

We can say our prayers

The holy ghost and the virgin Mary will heal us

As we kneel there

CHORUS:

In the moonlight, in the midnight, in the

            moonlight midnight moonlight

Did you ever feel sorrow

For deeds you have done

With no hope for tomorrow, in the setting of the sun

And the ocean is howling

With things that might have been

And that last good morning sunrise

Will be the brightest you've ever seen

CHORUS:

--Break--(B flat to G modulation)

Repeat Verse #2 and Chorus

MOUNTAINS OF MOURNE

as sung by Don McLean

Oh Mary, this London's a wonderful sight

With people here workin' by day and by night

They don't grow potatoes nor barley nor wheat

But there's gangs of them diggin' for gold in the streets

At least when I asked them, that's what I was told

So I just took a hand at this diggin' for gold

But for all that I found there I might as well be

In the place where the dark mourne slips down to the sea

I believe that when writin', I wish you'd expressed

As to how the fine ladies in London were dressed

Well if you'll believe me, when asked to a ball

They don't wear no tops to their dresses at all

Oh, I've seen them meself and you could not in truth

Tell that if they were bound for a ball or a bath

Don't be startin' them fashions, now Mary McCree

In the place where the dark mourne slips down to the sea

There's beautiful girls here, oh never you mind

Beautiful shapes nature never designed

Lovely complexions, all roses and cream

But let me remark with regard to the same

That if at those roses you venture to sip

The colors might all come away on your lip

So I'll wait for the wild rose that's waitin' for me

In the place where the dark mourne slips down to the sea

You remember young Denny McLaren, of course,

Well, he's over here with the rest of the force

I saw him one day as he stood on the strand

And stopped all the traffic with a wave of his hand

And as we were talking of days that are gone

The whole town of London stood there and looked on

But for all his great powers, he's wishful like me

To be back where the dark mourne slips down to the sea

MORNING HAS BROKEN

Cat Stevens

Morning has broken, like the first morning

Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird

Praise for the singing, praise for the morning

Praise for them springing, fresh from the world

Sweet the rains new fall, sunlit from Heaven

Like the first dew-fall, on the first grass

Praise for the sweetness, of the wet garden

Sprung in completeness, where his feet pass

Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning

Born of the one light, Eden saw play

Praise with elation, praise every morning

God's recreation, of the new day

Morning has broken, like the first morning

Blackbird has spoken, like the first birds

Praise for the singin, praise for the morning

Praise for them springing, fresh from the world

MATTY GROVES

Doc Watson version- C capoed on 3rd or 5th fret?

ŒTwas on the high, high holy day- the very best day in the year

Little Matty Groves to the church-house went, the holy words for to hear

Holy words for to hear

The first to come down was dressed in red, and the second one dressed in green

The third to come down was Lord Danielıs wife, as fair as any queen

Fair as any queen

Then Matty Groves said to one of his men, ³See the fair one dressed in white-

Although she is Lord Danielıs wife Iıll be with her tonight

Be with her tonight²

The little foot paige was aıstandinı by, and he heared every word that they said

He said, ³Lord Daniel shall know tonight, before I go to bed

Before I go to bed²

He had fifteen miles to go that night, and ten of them he run

He run Œtill he come to the broke-down bridge, then he bent to his breast and he swum

He bent to his breast and he swum

He swum till he come to where the grass was green, then he took to his feet and he run

He run till he come to Lord Danielıs gate, and he rattled at the bells and they rung,

He rattled at the bells and they rung

³What news, what news...² Lord Daniel said, ³What news to me have you brung?²

³Little Matty Groves is in the bed with your wife, and their hearts both beat as one

Their hearts both beat as one!²

³Now if the truth youıve told to me, a rich man you shall be

But if a lie youıve told to me, Iıll hang you from a tree

Hang you from a tree!²

Then he gathered him up about fifty good men, done it with a pretty good will,

He popped his bugle unto his lips and he blowed it loud and shrill

Blowed it loud and shrill

³Iıd better get up...² said little Matty Groves, ³Iıd better get up and go...

I know your husband is cominı home, for I heared his bugle blow

Heared his bugle blow!²

³Lay down, lay down, my precious one, lay down and go to sleep...

Itıs only my fatherıs shepherdıs horn, and heıs calling for his sheep

Calling for his sheep²

MATTY GROVES (continued)

Doc Watson- C capoed on 3rd or 5th fret?

So they lay down together again, and they soon were fast asleep

When they awoke it was broad daylight, Lord Daniel at their feet

Lord Daniel at their feet

³Get up from there, you naked man, and put you on some clothes..

For I never intend for to have it said that a naked man I slew

A naked man I slew²

³Oh give me a chance², said Little Matty Groves, ³a chance to fight for my life,

For there you have two very fine swords, and me not so much as a knife...

Me not so much as a knife!²

³Oh yes I have two very fine swords, and they cost me deep in the purse...

You may have the finest one, and I will take the worst...

I will take the worst!²

Then Matty Groves struck the very first blow, and he wounded Lord Daniel sore,

Lord Daniel struck the very next blow, and he drove Matty Groves to the floor,

Drove Matty Groves to the floor

Then he taken his lady by the hand and he set her on his knee

Saying, ³Now who do you love the best- little Matty Groves or me

Little Matty Groves or me??²

³Very well I like your rosy cheeks, very well I like your chin...
But better I love little Matty Groves than you and all of your kin

You and all of your kin!!²

³You can dig my grave on a pretty green hill,

Dig it wide and deep

And put little Matty Groves in my arms, Lord Daniel at my feet

Lord Daniel at my feet²

**Doc does not sing the verse where the Lord shoots (or cuts the head off) the unfaithful wife***

MATTHEW

John Denver

(Intro.- Steve plays opening line)

I had an uncle name of Matthew, was his fatherıs only boy

Born just south of Colby, Kansas, he was his motherıs pride and joy

CHORUS:

Yes and joy was just a thing that he was raised on

Love was just a way to live and die

Gold was just a windy Kansas wheat field

Blue just a Kansas summer sky

All the stories that he told me, back when I was just a lad

All the memories that he gave me, of all the good times that he had

Growinı up a Kansas farm boy, life was mostly havinı fun

Ridinı on his daddyıs shoulders, behind a mule beneath the sun

CHORUS

BREAK:       Steve and Marty- entire verse (Stan does riffs and fills)

Well I guess there were some hard times, and Iım told some years were lean

They had a storm in Œ47, a twister came and stripped them clean

He lost the farm, he lost his family, lost the wheat, he lost his home

But he found the family Bible, a faith as solid as a stone

CHORUS

INSTRU.:     Steve plays one line (like opening riff)

And so he came to live at our house, and he came to work the land

He came to ease my daddyıs burden, and he came to be my friend

And so I wrote this down for Matthew, and itıs for him this song is sung

Ridinı on his daddyıs shoulders, behind a mule beneath the sun

CHORUS (TWICE)

MR. BOJANGLES

Jerry Jeff Walker

Key of C

I knew a man, Bojangles, and heıd dance for you

In worn-out shoes

Silver hair, a ragged shirt, and baggy pants

Do the old ³soft shoe²

Heıd jump so high, jump so high,

Then heıd lightly touch down

I met him in a cell in New Orleans, I was

Down and out

He looked to me to be the eyes of age

As he spoke right out

He talked of life, talked of life,

Laughed and slapped his leg a step

He said his name ³Bojangles² and he danced a lick

Across the cell

He grabbed his pants for a better stance and he jumped so high

And he clicked his heels

He let go a laugh, let go a laugh,

Shook back his clothes all around....

CHORUS:

Mr. Bojangles, Mr. Bojangles, Mr. Bojangles.....

Come on.....dance

He said he danced for those at minstrel shows and county fairs

Throughout the south

He spoke with tears of fifteen years how his dog and him

Traveled about

His dog up and died, up and died

After twenty years he still grieves

He said, ³I dance now at every chance in honky-tonks

For drinks and tips

But most the time I spend behind these county bars

ŒCause I drinks a bit...²

He shook his head, and as he shook his head

I heard someone ask, ³Please....

Mr. Bojangles, Mr. Bojangles.....dance

Me and Bobby McGee

Kris Kristofferson

Busted flat in Baton Rouge, headed for the trains

Feelinı Œbout as faded as my jeans

Bobby thumbed a diesel down, just before it rained

Took us all the way to New Orleans

I pulled my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana

And was blowinı sad while Bobby sang the blues

With them windshield wipers slappinı time and Bobby clappinı hands

we finally sang up every song that driver knew

CHORUS:

Freedomıs just another word for nothinı left to lose

Nothinı ainıt worth nothinı, but itıs free

Feelinı good was easy, boys, when Bobby sang the blues

And feelinı good was good enough for me,

Good enough for me and Bobby McGee

(modulate key)

From the coal mines of Kentucky to the California shores

Bobby shared the secrets of my soul

Standinı right beside me, Lord, through everything I done

And every night she kept me from the cold

Ah, but somewhere near Salinas, I let her slip away

Lookinı for a home I hope sheıll find

And Iıd trade all my tomorrows for a single yesterday

Holdinı Bobbyıs body close to mine

CHORUS:

Freedomıs just another word for nothinı left to lose

Nothinı left was all she left for me

Feelinı good was easy, boys, when Bobby sang the blues

And feelinı good was good enough for me,

Good enough for me and Bobby McGee

Mountain Dew

Traditional, as sung by Grandpa Jones

My brother Bill runs a still on the hill

Where he turns out a gallon or two

And the buzzards in the sky get so drunk they canıt fly

Sniffinı good old Mountain Dew

CHORUS:

They call it that good old Mountain Dew,

And them that refuse it are few

Iıll shut up my mug if you fill up my jug

With that good old Mountain Dew

My Uncle Mort, heıs sawed-off and short,

He measures Œbout four-foot-two,

But he thinks heıs a giant when you give him a pint

Of that good old Mountain Dew

CHORUS:

You take a little trash and you mix it with ash,

And you throw in the sole of a shoe

Then you stir it a while with a rusty old file

And you call it that good old Mountain Dew

CHORUS:

Thereıs an old hollow tree not too far from me

Where you lay down a dollar or two

If you shut up your mug they will hand you a jug

Of that good old Mountain Dew

CHORUS:

The preacher walks by with a tear in his eye

He says that his wife has the flu

Sheıll be all right if you give him a pint

Of that good old Mountain Dew

CHORUS:

MTA

Bess Hawes, as sung by K. Trio

Well, let me tell you the story of a man named Charlie

On a tragic and fateful day

He put ten cents in his pocket, kissed his wife and family,

Went to ride on the MTA

CHORUS:

Well, did he ever return, no he never returned

And his fate is still unlearned

He may ride forever Œneath the streets of Boston,

Heıs the man who never returned

Charlie handed in his dime at the Kendall Square Station

And he changed for Jamaica Plain

When he got there the conductor told him, ³One more nickel²,

Charlie couldnıt get off of that train

CHORUS:

Now all night long Charlie rides through the stations

Crying, ³What will become of me?Š.

How can I afford to see my sister in Chelsea,

Or my cousin in Roxbury??²

CHORUS:

Charlieıs wife goes down to the Scully Square Station

Every day at quarter past two

And through the open window she hands Charlie a sandwich

As the train goes rumbling through

CHORUS:

Now you citizens of Boston, donıt you think itıs a scandal

How the people have to pay and pay?

Fight the fare increase, vote for George OıBrien,

Get Charlie off the MTA

CHORUS: (Or else heıll never returnŠŠ)

THE MERRY MINUET

as sung by Kingston Trio

Theyıre rioting in AfricaŠ(whistle)

Theyıre starving in SpainŠ(whistle)

Thereıs hurricaines in ForidaŠ(whistle)

And Texas needs rainŠ(whistle)

The whole world is festering with unhappy souls,

The French hate the Germans, the Germans hate the Poles

Italians hate Yugoslavs, South Africans hate the Dutch,

ŠAnd I donıt like anybody very much!

But we can be tranquil and thankful and proud,

For manıs been endowed with a mushroom-shaped cloud

And we know for certain that some lovely day

Someone will set the spark offŠand we will all be blown away!

Theyıre rioting in AfricaŠ(whistle)

Thereıs strife in IranŠ(whistle)

What nature doesnıt do to usŠ(whistle)

Will be done by our fellow man!!!

MARGARITAVILLE

Jimmy Buffet

Livinı on sponge cakeŠŠwatchinı the sun bake,

All of them tourists covered with oil

Strumminı my six-stringŠ..on my front porch swing,

Smell of the shrimp dip beginninı to boil

CHORUS:

Wastinı away again in Margaritaville,

Searchinı for my lost shaker of salt,

Some people claim that thereıs a woman to blame,

But I knowŠitıs nobodyıs fault

I donıt know the reasonŠ..stayed here all season,

Nothinı to show but this brand new tattoo

But itıs a real beautyŠ..a Mexican cutie,

And how it got here you know I havenıt a clue

CHORUS

(But I knowŠŠit could be my fault)

INSTRUMENTAL

Threw out my flip-flopsŠŠstepped on a pop-top,

Cut my heel, had to cruise on back home

But thereıs booze in the blender, and soon it will render

That frozen concoction that helps me hang on

CHORUS

(But I knowŠŠitıs my own damn fault)

Me and Julio

Paul Simon

Intro.:

Well, Mama Pajama rolled out of bed and she ran to the police station,

And when the papa found out he began to shout, you know he started the

investigation

Itıs against the law, it was against the law,

What the mama saw, it was against the law

Well the mama looked down and spit on the ground every time my name gets

mentioned

And the papa said, ³Oy, if I get that boy, Iım gonna stick him in the house of

detention!²

CHORUS:

And Iım on my way, I donıt know where Iım goinı,

Iım on my way, takinı my time but I donıt know where,

Goodbye Rosie, queen of Corona,

See me and Julio down by the schoolyard

See me and Julio down by the schoolyard

INSTRUMENTAL (intro. chords)- Stop

(Hey, hey!) In a couple of days theyıre gonna take me away

But the press let the story leak

And when the radical priest come and get me released

You know we all made the cover of Newsweek!

CHORUS

(end with Intro. chords)

No Depression in Heaven

As sung by NLC Ramblers

For fear the hearts of men are failing

For these are latter days, we know

The Great Depression now is spreading,

Godıs word declared it would be so

CHORUS:

Iım going where thereıs no depression

To the lovely land thatıs free from care

Iıll leave this world of toil and trouble,

My homeıs in Heaven, Iım-a-going there

In that bright land thereıll be no hunger,

No orphan children cryinı for bread,

No weeping widows, toil or struggle,

No shrouds, no coffins, and no death

CHORUS

This dark hour of midnight nearing

And tribulation time will come,

The storms will hurl the midnight fears

And sweep lost millions to their doom

CHORUS

NIGHT LIFE BLUES

as sung by John Sebastian

Iım gettinı tired of roaminı Œround

Believe Iıll get married, and Iıll settle down

ŒCause this old night life, itıs a bad life

And itıs killinı me

I got a letter from my home,

And most of my good friends, they are dead and gone

And it makes me worry, no need to wonder

ŒBout the times to come

Iıve been a gambler, and a cheater too

Now itıs come my, my time to lose

ŒCause this old night life, itıs just holdinı the best hand,

And what can I do?

(Instrumental)

Mother used to fall on her knees and pray,

These are the very words she did say,

She said, ³Oh Johnny, my lovinı Johnny,

Wonıt you please change your ways?²

And Iım gettinı tired of roaminı Œround

Believe Iıll get married, and Iıll settle down

ŒCause this old night life, itıs a bad life

And itıs killinı me

NEVER NO MOı BLUES

Jimmie Rodgers

Iım just as blue as I can be

Since Suzie said goodbye to me

My life is a failure, I see

And she wonıt be my gal no moı, no moı, no moıŠŠno moı

Yodelaeee, ayeee, ayeee

Iıll pack my things in a grip,

Take me a long ocean trip

Out on a great big steamship

Sheıll never see her daddy no moı, no moı, no moıŠŠno moı

Lord, I hate to say farewell

To my Mammy and my sister Nell

They sure gonna cry when I tell

Them I ainıt cominı home no moı, no moı, no moıŠŠno moı

Yodelaeee, ayeee, ayeee

I guess Iıll be sorry some day

That I leave here and go away

But you need not ask me to stay,

For I never change my mind no moı, no moı, no moıŠŠno moı

Now whether Iım right or wrong,

Iım gonna be gone before long

And then Iıll hush my crazy song

And I never will sing no moı, no moı, no moıŠŠno moı

Yodelaeee, ayeee, ayeee

AN OLD FOLKS-SONG (by Steve Noceti)

(with apologies to Peter Rowan)

Too late to feel sorrow, too late to feel pain-

He's just an old geezer, his youth runnin' down the drain

He'll never cause trouble, he don't have much hair-

And he sold the old homestead, he'll soon be far away from there

CHORUS:

He used to be a younger man, just like you,

Until he hit 4-0, and there was nothin' no one could do

His wife and two children, used to live in L.A.-

Oh they miss their little cottage, up Altadena way

Now they're squeezed in their trailer, down Tennessee way

When Daddy gets his strength back, gonna build a house some day

CHORUS:

Oh, don't make him ask you, don't make him beg-

He fell off the ladder, and that's how he hurt his leg

Though he cleared thirty acres, with a back-hoe and chain

Now he's just an old geezer, racked with aches and pains

CHORUS:

(for David Jones' 40th birthday)

OLD, OLD HOUSE

As sung by Peter Rowan

Thereıs an old, old house that once was a mansion

On a hill overlooking the town

But time left a wreckage where once there was beauty

And soon the old house had tumbled down

CHORUS

And when the leaves start to fall in autumn

And the rain drops drip from the trees

Thereıs an old, old man who walks through the garden

And his head is bowed in memory

INSTRU.

Well they say he built that mansion for the love of a woman

And they planned to be married in the fall

But her love faded with the last rose of summer

And the house stood empty after all

CHORUS

And when the leaves start to fall in autumn

And the rain drops drip from the trees

Thereıs an old, old man who walks through the garden

And his head is bowed in memory

THE OLD DOUBLE-DIAMOND

Ian Tyson

Now the old Double-Diamond lay out east of Dubois

In the land of the buffalo

And the auctioneerıs gavel, how it rapped and it rattled

As I watched the old Double-Diamond go

Wonıt you listen to the wind....

            .....Mother Natureıs violins

When I first hired on to the old Double-Diamond

I was a damn poor excuse for a man

Never learned how to aim when the spirit was tame

Couldnıt see all the cards in my hand

Then the wind whipped the granite above me......

....Blew the tumbleweeds clean through my soul

Yeah, I fought her winters, and I busted her horses

And I took more than I thought I could stand

But the battles with the mountains and cattle

Seemed to bring out the best in a man

I guess a sailor, he needs an ocean

And a mama her babies to hold

And I need those hills of Wyoming.....

.....in the land of the buffalo

BREAK

Now sheıs selling out, and Iım movinı on

But Iım leaving with more than I came

Cause I got this saddle, and it ainıt for sale

And Iıve got this song to sing

Iıll find a new range to ride, new knots to tie

In a country where cowboys are kings

Iıll turn my tail to the wind, and the old Double-Diamond......

            .....and disappear into the sage

ONE NIGHT

As sung by Elvis

One night with you

Is what Iım now prayinı for

The things that we two could plan

Would make my dreams come true

Just call my name,

And Iıll be right by your side

I need your sweet, loving smile

My loveıs too strong to hide

BRIDGE:

Always livedŠin the twilight

But I ainıt neverŠdid no wrong

Now I know that life without youıs

Been too lonely too long

One night with you

Is what Iım now prayinı for

The things that we two could plan

Would make my dreams come true

OLD SHEP

Jimmy Driftwood

When I was a lad, and old Shep was a pup

Over hills and mountains weıd roam

Just a boy and his dog, we were both full of fun,

We grew up together that way

I remember the time at the old swimminı hole

When I would have drowned beyond doubt

Old Sheppie was there, to the rescue he came,

He jumped in and helped pull me out

The years passed on by, and old Shep he got old

His eyesight was fast growinı dim

Then one day the doctor looked at him and said,

³I cainıt do no more for him, Jim²

With tears in my eyes, I picked up my gun

And aimed it at Shepıs faithful head

But I just couldnıt do it, I wanted to run,

I wish they would shoot me instead

Old Sheppie he knowıd he was goinı to go

For he reached out and licked at my hand

I stroked the best pal a man ever had,

I cried Œtil I scarcely could sleep

Old Sheppie heıs gone where the good doggies go,

No more with old Shep will I roam,

But if dowgs have a Heaven, thereıs one thing I know,

Old Shep has a wonderful home!

OLD TIME ROCK ŒNı ROLL

Bob Seger

Just take those old records off the shelf,

Iıll sit and listen to them by myself,

Todayıs music ainıt got the same soul

I like that old time rock and roll

Donıt try and take me to a disco,

Youıll never even get me out on the floor

In ten minutes Iıll be late for the door

I like that old time rock and roll

CHORUS:

I like that old time rock and roll

That kinda music just soothes my soul

I reminisce about the days of old

With that old time rock and roll

Donıt want to hear them play a mambo,

Iıd rather hear some blues and funky old soul

Todayıs music ainıt got the same soul

I like that old time rock and roll

Call me a relic, call me what you will,

Say Iım old fashioned, say Iım over the hill

Todayıs music ainıt got the same soul

I like that old time rock and roll

CHORUS:

CHORUS: (a capella)

CHORUS:

-go out with instrumental-

Old Train

As sung by Tony Rice and Herb Pedersen

Old trainŠŠ I can hear your whistle blow

And I won't be jumpin' on again

Old trainŠŠ.. I've been everywhere you go

And I know what lies beyond each bend

(Chorus)

Old train each time you pass you're older than the last

And it seemsŠ. I'm too old for runninı

I hear your rusty wheels grate against the rails

They cry with every mileŠ.and I think I'll stay awhile

Instrumental

Old trainŠ.. I grow weary at the miles
And I miss the freedom that was mine
Old trainŠŠ. just to think about those times
I'll smile when youıre high-ballinı by

Chorus:

OLD AND IN THE WAY

As sung by Peter Rowan and the group

(Refrain)

Old and in the way, thatıs what I heard them say

They used to heed the words he said, but that was yesterday

Gold will turn to grey, and youth will fade away

Theyıll never care about you, Œcause youıre old and in the way

Once I hear tell he was happy, had his share of friends and good times

Now those friends have all passed on, he donıt have a place called home

Lookinı back to a better day, feelinı old and in the way

Refrain

BREAK

When just a boy he left his home, thought heıd have the world on a string

Now the years have come and gone, through the streets he walks alone

Like the old dog gone astray, heıs just old and in the way

Refrain

(Repeat)

Theyıll never care about you, Œcause youıre old and in the way

OUTSKIRTS OF TOWN

by Casey Bill Weldon

I'm gonna move, way out on the outskirts of town
I'm gonna move, way out on the outskirts of town
Baby, no I don't want nobody, wooooŠŠ..always hangin' 'round

BREAK

Gonna buy you a Frigidaire, baby,

Bring groceries home ev'ryday,

You wonıt need no grocery boy

Stoppinı by on Saturday

That's why I'm gonna move, way out on the outskirts of town
ıCause I donıt want nobodyŠŠ.. always hangin' 'round

BREAK

May seem funny, honey
Funny, funny as can be
If we have any children
I want 'em to look all like me

That's why I'm gonna move, way out on the outskirts of town
Well then I won't have nobodyŠ..always hangin' 'round

BREAK/OUT

PANAMA RED

Peter Rowan

CHORUS:

Panama Red, Panama Red,

He'll steal your woman, then he'll rob your head

Panama Red, Panama Red,

On his white horse Mescalito

He comes breezin' through town,

Bet your woman's up in bed with old

Panama Red

The judge don't know when Red's in town,

He keeps well hidden underground

Everybody's actin' lazy, fallin' out and hangin' round

My woman said, "Hey Pedro, you're actin' crazy like a clown

Nobody feels like workin', Panama Red is back in town

CHORUS:

Everybody's lookin' out for him cause they know Red satisfies

Little girls love to listen to him sing and tell sweet lies

When things get too confusin', honey, we're better off in bed

And I'll be searchin' all the joints in town for Panama Red

CHORUS:

POSITIVELY FOURTH STREET

Bob Dylan

Key of G

Youıve got a lot of nerve to say you are my friend

When I was down you just stood there grinning

Youıve got a lot of nerve to say youıve got a helping hand to lend

You just want to be on the side thatıs winning

You say I let you down, you know itıs not like that

If youıre so hurt, why then donıt you show it?

You say you lost your faith, but thatıs not where itıs at

You had no faith to lose, and you know it

I know the reason that you talk behind my back

I used to be among the crowd youıre in with

Do you take me for such a fool, to think Iıd make contact

With the one who tries to hide what he donıt know to begin with?

You see me on the street, you always act surprised

You say, ³How are you- good luck!², but you donıt mean it

When you know as well as me, youıd rather see me paralyzed

Why donıt you just come out once and scream it??

Though I do not feel that good when I see the heartbreaks you embrace

If I was a master thief, perhaps Iıd rob them

And though I know youıre dissatisfied with your position and your place

Donıt you understand, itıs not my problem?

I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes

And just for that one moment I could be you

Yes, I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes

Youıd know what a drag it is to see you!

PANCHO AND LEFTY

Townes Van Zandt

Living on the road my friend, is gonna keep you free and clean,

Now you wear your skin like iron, your breathıs as hard as kerosene,

Werenıt your mamaıs only boy, but her favorite one it seems,

She began to cry when you said goodbye, and sank into her dreams

Pancho was a bandit boy, his horse was fast as polished steel,

He wore his gun outside his pants for all the honest world to feel

Pancho met his match you know, on the deserts down in Mexico

And nobody heard his dying wordsŠ. ah, but thatıs the way it goes

CHORUS

All the Federales say they couldıve had him any day,

They only let him slip awayŠ out of kindness I suppose

Lefty canıt sing the blues all night long, like he used to

The dust that Pancho bit down south ended up in Leftyıs mouth

The day they laid poor Pancho low, Lefty split for Ohio

And where he got the bread to go, ainıt nobody knows

The poets tell how Pancho fell, and Leftyıs livinı in a cheap hotel,

The desertıs quiet and Clevelandıs cold, and so the story ends Iım told

Pancho needs your prayers, itıs true, but save a few for Lefty too

He only did what he had to do, and now heıs growing old

CHORUS

(Final Chorus):

A few great Federales say they couldıve had him any day

They only let him go so long out of kindness I suppose

PAMELA BROWN

as sung by Leo Kottke

Iım the guy that didnıt marry pretty Pamela Brown

Educated, well-intentioned, good girl in our town

Wonder where Iıd be today if she had loved me too

Probably be drivinı kids to school

CHORUS:

And I guess I owe it all to Pamela Brown

All of my good times, all of my roaminı around

One of these days I might be in your town

And I guess I owe it all to Pamela Brown

Iıve seen the lights of cities and Iıve been inside their doors,

Sailed to foreign countries, and Iıve walked upon their shores,

I guess the guy she married was the best part of my luck

She dug him Œcause he drove a pickup truck

CHORUS:

I donıt have to tell you just how beautiful she was

She was everything it takes to get a guy like me in love

Lord, I hope sheıs happy, Œcause she sure deserves to be

Especially for what she did for me

CHORUS:

PERCYıS SONG

Bob Dylan , as sung by Arlo Guthrie

Sad news, sad news, comes to where I sleep

Turn........turn again,

Saying one of my friends is in trouble deep

Turn, turn to the wind and the rain

Tell me the trouble, tell it once to my ears

Turn........turn again,

Joliet Prison for ninety-nine years

Turn, turn to the wind and the rain

A crash on the highway threw a car into a field

Turn........turn again,

There were four people killed, and he was at the wheel

Turn, turn to the wind and the rain

But I know him as well as I know my own self

Turn........turn again,

And he wouldnıt harm a life that belonged to someone else

Turn, turn to the wind and the rain

³That may be so,² said the judge from the side of his mouth

Turn........turn again,

³But the witness who saw it, he left little doubt²

Turn, turn to the wind and the rain

³He may, he may have a sentence for to serve,²

Turn........turn again,

³But ninety-nine years he just does not deserve²

Turn, turn to the wind and the rain

³Too late, too late, for his case it is sealed,²

Turn........turn again,

³Sentence it is passed, and it cannot be repealed²

Turn, turn to the wind and the rain

³But he ainıt no criminal, and his crime it is none²

Turn........turn again,

³And what happened to him couldıve happened to anyone²

Turn, turn to the wind and the rain

At that the judge jerked forward and his face it did freeze,

Turn........turn again,

Saying, ³Would you kindly leave my office now please²

Turn, turn to the wind and the rain

PERCYıS SONG

(continued)

I squinted my eyes, and I stood up so slow

Turn........turn again,

With no other choice except for me to go

Turn, turn to the wind and the rain

I walked down the hall and I heard his door slam

Turn........turn again,

I walked down the stairs, but I could not understand

Turn, turn to the wind and the rain

I played my guitar through the night and through the day

Turn........turn again,

But the only tune that my guitar would play

Was ³Oh, how cruel, the wind and the rain²

PLEASE DON'T BURY ME

John Prine

Woke up this morning, put on my slippers,

Walked in the kitchen and died

And oh, what a feeling when my soul went through the ceiling

And on up into Heaven I did rise

When I got there they did say, ³John it happened this-a-way-

You slipped upon the floor and hit your head,

And all the angels say, just before you passed away,

These were the very last words that you said²,

CHORUS:

Please don't bury me down in the cold cold ground

No I'd rather have Œem cut me up, pass me all around

Throw my brain in a hurricane, and the blind can have my eyes,

And the deaf can take both of my ears, if they don't mind the size

Give my stomach to Milwaukee if they run out of beer

Throw my socks in a cedar box- just get Œem out of here

Venus DeMilo can have my arms- look out, I've got your nose!

Sell my heart to the junkman, and give my love to Rose, but

CHORUS:

Give my feet to the footloose, careless, fancy-free,

Give my knees to the needy- don't pull that stuff on me!

Hand me down my walkinı cane, it's a sin to tell a lie,

Send my mouth way down south, and kiss my ass goodbye, but

CHORUS:

PATRIOTIC MEDLEY

H-A-double R-I, G-A-N spells Harrigan,

Proud of all the Irish blood that's in me,

Divil a man can say a word agin' me,

H-A-double R-I, G-A-N, you see,

Is a name that a shame never has been connected with

HARRIGANŠ. that's me!

Give my regards to Broadway, remember me to Herald Square,

Tell all the gang on forty-second street that I will soon be there

Whisper of how I'm yearning to mingle with the old-time throng

Give my regards to old Broadway, and tell them I'll be there ere long!

'Cause I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy, Yankee Doodle, do or die

A real live nephew of my Uncle Sam, born on the fourth of July

I've got a Yankee Doodle sweetheart, she's my Yankee Doodle joy

Yankee Doodle went to town, just to ride the pony,

I am that Yankee Doodle boy!

You're a grand old flag, you're a high-flying flag,

And forever in peace may you wave,

You're the emblem ofŠ the land I loveŠ

The home of the free and the brave

Every heart beats true for the red, white, and blue,

And with never a boast or bragŠ.

And should auld acquaintance be forgot,

Keep your eye on the grand old flag

G7- (Modulating up to C)

Over hill, over dale, we shall hit the dusty trail

As those caissons keep rolling along

In and out, hear them shout, "Counter-march and turn about!",

As those caissons keep rolling along

And it's Hi, Hi, HeeŠ in the field artillery,

Shout out your numbers loud and strongŠ"One, two!",

And where e'er we go, you will always know,

That those caissons keep rolling along!

Anchors aweigh, my boys, anchors aweigh,

Farewell to college joys, we sail at break of day-ay-ay-ay

Through our last night on shore, drink to the foam,

Until we meet again, here's wishing you a happy voyage home!

Up we go, into the wild blue yonder, climbing high into the sun

Here they come, zooming to meet our thunderŠ

At 'em boys, give 'em the gun

Down we dive, spouting our flame from underŠ.

Off on one hell of a courseŠ

We live in fame or go down in flames

Nothing'll stop the U.S. Air Force!

From the halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli,

We will fight our country's battles, on the land and on the sea,

First to fight for right and freedom, and to keep our honor clean,

We are proud to bear the title of United States Marines

God bless AmericaŠŠ.land that I love,

Stand beside her, and guide her,

Through the night with the light from above

From the mountains to the prairies to the oceans, white with foam,

God bless AmericaŠmy home sweet home!! (TWICE)

PIANO MAN

Billy Joel

Well itıs nine oıclock on a Friday night

Regular crowd shuffles in

Thereıs lots of folks sittinı Œround the bar

Makinı love to their tonics and gin

They say, ³Man, can you play me a memory,

Iım not really sure how it goes,

But itıs sad and itıs sweet, and I knew it complete

When I wore a younger manıs clothes

O-oh, laaa-daaa-de-de-da, la-da-da-de-de-daaa, da-daaa

CHORUS:

Sing us a song, youıre the piano man

Sing us a song tonight

ŒCause weıre all in the mood for a melody,

And youıve got us feeling all right

Now Bill at the bar, heıs a friend of ours,

Gets us our drinks for free,

And heıs quick with a joke or to light up your smoke,

But thereıs some place that heıd rather be

He says, ³Man, I believe this is killing me,²

As the smile ran away from his face

³ıCause I know that I could be a movie star,

If I could get out of this place²

O-oh, laaa-daaa-de-de-da, la-da-da-de-de-daaa, da-daaa

CHORUS

Now Paul is a real estate novelist

Who never had time for a wife

And heıs talking with Davy, whoıs still in the Navy,

And probably will be for life

And the waitress is practicing politics

As the businessmen slowly get stoned

Yes, theyıre sharing a drink they call loneliness

But itıs better than drinking alone

O-oh, laaa-daaa-de-de-da, la-da-da-de-de-daaa, da-daaa

CHORUS

Not a bad crowd for a Friday night

Manager gives us a smile

For he knows that itıs we theyıve been cominı to see

To forget about life for a while

And the piano sounds like a carnival

And the microphone smells like a beer

And they sit at the bar and put bread in our jar

Saying, ³Man, what are you doing here?²

O-oh, laaa-daaa-de-de-da, la-da-da-de-de-daaa, da-daaa

CHORUS

THE RIGHT GIRL

Stephen Stills

D Tuning (played in key of A)

She's a honkey-tonk angel that you meet in the night

And she knows how to love you and make you feel right

She gonna wave you goodbye from the back of a bike

She's the wrong reason for thinkin' you might....never

Never love...

The right girl

She keeps all her deep feelings wrapped up real tight

But she is gonna tell you what she does that she don't like

She's a little bit hard, certainly too tough to fight

She's the wrong reason for thinkin' you might...never

Never love...

The right girl

(Bridge)

When she's around your head starts a'spinnin'

And she'll make you forget how you're mostly not winnin'

On a whim this girl would never think twice

About leavin' a good man if another seemed nice

She's the wrong reason for thinkin' you might...never

Never love...

The right girl

When the woman for you suddenly shows up my friend

If your head is all messed up and full of big plans

You gonna miss her completely, never give her a chance

And for all the wrong reasons you're thinkin' you can't...ever

Ever love...

The right girl

The right girl

When itıs time for leavinı, I hope youıll understand

I was born a ramblinı man

v.1

My father was a gambler down in Georgia

He wound up on the wrong end of a gun

And I was born in the back seat of a Greyhound bus

Rollinı down Highway 41

CHORUS:

v.2

Leavinı out of Nashville, Tennessee

Always havinı a good time down on the bayou, Lord

Delta women think the world of me

CHORUS:

RIPPLE

Grateful Dead, as sung by Chris Hillman

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine

And my tunes were played on the heart of a strum

Would you hear my voice come through the music

Would you hold it near, as it were your own

Itıs a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken

Perhaps theyıre better left un-sung

I donıt know, donıt really care

Let there be songs to fill the air

REFRAIN:

Ripples in still water, when there is no pebble tossed,

No wind to blow

Reach out your hand, if your cup is empty

If your cup is full, may it be a gift

Let it be known there is a fountain

That was not made by the hands of man

INSTRUMENTAL BREAK:

REFRAIN #2:

Ripples in still water, when there is no pebble tossed,

No wind to blow

There is a road, no simple highway

Between the dawn and the dark of night

And if you go, no one may follow,

That path is for your steps alone

REASON TO BELIEVE

Tim Hardin

If I listened long enough to you

Iıd find a way to believe that itıs all true

Knowing that you lied, straight-faced, while I cried

Still I look to find a reason to believe

CHORUS:

Somebody like you makes it hard to live without somebody else

Somebody like you makes it easy to give, never thinking of myself

BREAK:   1st half verse- Alec/ 2nd half verse- Marty

If I gave you time to change my mind

Iıd find a way to leave the past behind

Knowing that you lied, straight-faced, while I cried

Still I look to find a reason to believe

CHORUS:

REPEAT FIRST VERSE

CODA (a capella):

Yeah, I look to find a reason to believe

(dead end on ³believe²)

RAINBOWS ALL OVER YOUR BLUES

John Sebastian

Iıve been waitinı my time just to talk to you

Youıve been lookinı all down-in-the-mouth,

And down at your shoes

Well, baby, I come to give you the news

Iıll paint rainbows all over your blues

I heard youıve been spendinı a lot of your time up in your room

And at night youıve been watchinı

The dark side of the moon

You donıt talk to nobody if they donıt talk to you,

So a buddy and me came here to sing you a tune

INSTRUMENTAL

³Why give up?² is all youıve really got to say,

Itıs time to find a new lifestyle, cause this really ainıt the way

Letıs go for a bounce on my trampoline,

I can show you the prettiest mountains that youıve ever seen,

You better run to your closet

And fish out your blue suede shoes,

Iıll paint rainbows all over your blues

RAMBLINı BOY

Tom Paxton

He was a man, and a friend always,

He stuck with me through the hard old days

Never cared if I had no dough,

We rambled Œround through the rain and snow

CHORUS:

And hereıs to you, my ramblinı boy

May all your ramblinı bring you joy

Hereıs to you, my ramblinı boy

May all your ramblinı bring you joy

In Tulsa town, we chanced to stray,

We thought weıd try to work one day

The boss said he had room for one,

Said my old pal, ³Weıd rather bum²

CHORUS

Late one night, in a jungle camp,

The weather it was cold and damp

He got the chills, and he got Œem bad

They took the only friend I had

CHORUS

He left me here, to ramble on

My ramblinı pal is dead and gone

If when we die we go somewhere,

Iıll bet you a dollar heıs ramblinı there

CHORUS

ROVING GAMBLER

As sung by Jack Elliott

Iım a roving gambler, Iıve gambled all around,

Whenever I meet with a deck of cards I lay my money down,

Boys, lay my money down

I gambled up in Washington, gambled down in Maine,

Iım on my way to Georgia to knock down my last game,

Boys, knock down my last game

Well, I had not been in Washington many more weeks than three

When I fell in love with a pretty little gal, and she fell in love with me,

Boys, fell in love with me

She took me to her parlor, she cooled me with her fan

She whispered low in her mommaıs ear, ³I love this gamblinı man,

Ma, I love this gamblinı man²

³Oh, daughter, my dear daughter, how can you treat me so

To leave you dear old mamma and with this gambler go,

And with this gambler go?²

³Momma, my dear momma, you know I love you well,

But the love I hold for the gamblinı man no human tongue can tell,

Ma, no human tongue can tell²

³I would not marry a farmer, heıs always in the rain,

Iıd rather marry a gamblinı man with a big old watch and chain,

Ma, big old watch and chain²

³And I would not marry a railroad man, tell you the reason why,

I never did see a railroad man that wouldnıt tell his wife a lie,

Ma, wouldnıt tell his wife a lie²

I hear the train a-cominı, sheıs cominı Œround the curve

Whistlinı and a-blowinı and a-straininı every nerve

Straininı every nerve

Mamma, my dear mamma, Iıll tell you if I can

If you ever see me cominı home again, itıll be with the gamblinı man

Ma, be with the gamblinı man!

RIDIN' DOWN THE CANYON

Gene Autry/Bob Nolan (Riders In The Sky version)

When evening chores are over at our ranch house on the plains

And all I have to do is lay around

I saddle up my pony and go ridin' down the trail

To watch that evening sun go down

Ridin' down the canyon to watch the sun go down

A picture that no artist e'er could paint

White-faced cattle lowin' on the mountainside

I hear a coyote whinin' for his mate

Cactus flowers bloomin', sagebrush everywhere,

Granite spires standing all around

I tell you folks it's heaven to be ridin' down the trail

When the desert sun goes down

BREAK (verse melody)

Cactus flowers bloomin', sagebrush everywhere,

Granite spires standing all around

I tell you folks it's heaven to be ridin' down the trail

When the desert sun goes down

Richland Women Blues

Mississippi John Hurt

Give me red lipstick and a bright poppy rouge

A shinglebob haircut and a shot of good booze

CHORUS:

Hurry down sweet Daddy, come blowin' your horn

If you come too late your mama will be gone

Come along young man, everything's settinı right
My husband gone away 'til late Saturday night
CHORUS:

Now I'm rarin' to go, got red shoes on my feet
My mind is set right for tin lizzyıs seat
CHORUS:

Stop at the fashion shop, get the one that looks best
Your own sweet mama wants a brand new dress
CHORUS:

Red rooster says, "Cockadoodle do doo"
The Richland women say, "Any dude will do."

CHORUS:

Every Sunday morning, church watchin' me go
My wings sprouted out, the preacher told me so.
CHORUS:

With rosy red garters and pink hose on my feet
Turkey-red bloomer with a rumble seat
CHORUS:

Dress skirt high, then they cut low,
Don't think I'm a sport, keep on watchin' me go.
CHORUS:

SATISFIED MIND

How many times have you heard someone say

If I had his money I'd do things my way

But little they know that it's so hard to find

One rich man in ten with a satisfied mind

Once I was living in fortune and fame

Everything that I dreamed for, to get a start in life's game

Then suddenly it happened, I lost every dime

Now I'm richer by far with a satisfied mind

'Cause money can't buy back your youth when you're old

Or a friend when you're lonely, or a heart that's grown cold

The wealthiest person is a pauper at times

Compared to the man with a satisfied mind

SOMEDAY SOON

Ian Tyson, as sung by Judy Collins

There's a young man that I know, the age of 21

Comes from down in southern Colorado

Just out of the service and he's lookin' for his fun

Someday soon, goin' with him, someday soon

My parents cannot stand him, cause he rides the rodeo

My father says that he will leave me cryin'

I would follow him right down the toughest road I know

Someday soon, goin' with him, someday soon

CHORUS:

And when he comes to call my pa ain't got a good word to say

Guess it's cause he was just as wild in the younger days

So blow you old blue northern, blow my love to me

Heıs ridinı in tonight from California

He loves this damned old rodeo as much as he loves me

Someday soon, goin' with him, someday soon

INSTRUMENTAL (verse melody)

CHORUS

And when he comes to call my pa ain't got a good word to say

Guess it's cause he was just as wild in the younger days

So blow you old blue northern, blow my love to me

Heıs ridinı in tonight from California

He loves this damned old rodeo as much as he loves me

Someday soon, goinı with him, someday soon

SLIP-SLIDIN' AWAY

Paul Simon

CHORUS:

Slip-slidin' away

Slip-slidin' away

You know the nearer your destination

The more you're slip-slidin' away

I know a man- he came from my home town

He wore his passion for his woman like a thorny crown

He said, "Dolores....I live in fear,

My love for you's so overpowerin' I'm afraid that I will disappear"

CHORUS:....He's......

And I know a woman- became a wife

These are the very words she uses to describe her life

She said, "A good day ain't got no rain",

She said, "A bad day's when I lie in bed and think of things that might have been"

CHORUS:.....She's.....

I know a father who had a son

He longed to tell him all the reasons for the things he'd done

He came a long way, just to explain,

Kissed his boy as he lay sleeping and he turned around and headed home again

CHORUS:......He's.......

God only knows- God makes his plan

The information's unavailable to the mortal man

We're workin' our jobs, collect our pay,

Believe we're glidin' down the highway when in fact we're slip-slidin' away

CHORUS:

SULTANS OF SWING

Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits

Intro.: Instrumental lick

Thereıs a shiver in the dark, itıs raininı in the park, and meantime

Down at the river you stop and you hold everything

A band is blowing Dixie, double four-time

You feel all right when you hear the music ring

So you step inside, but you donıt see too many faces

Cominı in out of the rain to hear the jazz go down

Competition in other places

Ah, but the horns, theyıre blowinı that sound

Way on downtown,

Way on downtown, London-town

(Instrumental lick)

Check out Guitar George, he knows all the chords

But itıs strictly rhythm, he doesnıt want to make it cry or sing

They say an old guitar is all he can afford

When he gets up under the lights to play his thing

With the Sultans

With the Sultans of Swing

(Instrumental lick)

And a crowd of young boys, theyıre foolinı around in the corner

With their best brown baggies and their platform soles

They donıt give a damn about any trumpet-playinı band

It ainıt what they call ŒRock and Rollı

And the Sultans

And the Sultans play Creole......Creole

(Instrumental lick)

BREAK- (One complete verse)

And then the man steps right up to the microphone

And says at last, just as the time bell rings,

³Goodnight, well itıs time to go home²

And he makes it fast, with ³One more thing....

We are the Sultans

We are the Sultans of Swing!²

(Instrumental lick)

(Go out with verse played instrumentally)

SHOWER THE PEOPLE

James Taylor

You can play the game, you can act out the part,

Though you know it wasnıt written for you

Tell me, how can you stand there with your broken heart,

Ashamed to play the fool?

One thing can lead to another....it doesnıt take any sacrifice,

Oh, father and mother, sister and brother,

If it feels nice, donıt think twice....just

CHORUS:

Shower the people you love with love, show them the way that you feel

Things are gonna work out fine, if you only will...

Shower the people you love with love, show them the way that you feel

Things are gonna be much better, if you only will...

You can run, but you cannot hide, this is widely known

And what you plan to do with your foolish pride

When youıre all by yourself alone?

Once you tell somebody the way that you feel

You can feel it beginning to ease

I think itıs true what they say about the squeaky wheel...

Always getting the grease....better to

CHORUS:

INSTRUMENTAL: (Em/run to G/then A/ e note)

(Steve vocal while Joe vamps vocally)

Shower the people you love with love, show them the way that you feel

STAGGER LEE

as sung by Mississippi John Hurt

Stagger Lee was a bad man, everybody knows,

He spent one hundred dollars just to buy him a suit of clothes

Heıs a bad man, oh cruel Stagger Lee

Gentlemen of the jury, what do you think about that?

Stagger Lee shot Billy DeLyon for a two-dollar Stetson hat

That bad man, oh cruel Stagger Lee

Billy De Lyon said, ³Stagger Lee, please donıt take my life

Iıve got two little babes and a darlinı lovinı wife²

Heıs a bad man, oh cruel Stagger Lee

³What do I care about your two little babes, darlinı lovinı wife,

You done stole my Stetson hat and Iım bound to take your life²

That bad man, oh cruel Stagger Lee

Standinı in the witness box, Stagger Lee did curse

The judge says, ³Letıs kill him, before he kills one of us!²

Heıs a bad man, oh cruel Stagger Lee

Standinı on the gallows, winds a-blowinı high

At twelve oıclock the killed him, they was all glad to see him die

That bad man, oh cruel Stagger Lee

Stagger Lee was a bad man, everybody knows,

He spent one hundred dollars just to buy him a suit of clothes

Heıs a bad man, oh cruel Stagger Lee

THE SHIPYARD APPRENTICE

as sung by Norman Blake

I was born in the shadow of a Fairfield's crane,

And the blast of a freighter's horn

Was the very first sound that reached my ears

On the morning I was born

I lay and I listened to the shipyard sounds

            Coming out of the unknown,

And was lulled to sleep by a mother tongue

That was to be my own

But when I grew to one year old

I heard the sirens scream

As the city watched in blacked-out night

A wandering search light beam

Then, at last, I awoke and rose

To my first day of peace

And I learned that the battle to stay alive

            Was never going to cease

BREAK

I sat and I listened to my father tell

Of the days that he once knew

When you either sweated for a measley wage

Or joined the parish pew

And times got harder day by day

            Along the river side

And I often heard my mother say,

"It was tears that made the Clyde"

I've sat in the steel pier Ninety-four

And dreamed of the world outside

Where the river turns, and the blighters watch

Their ships slip through the Clyde

I've served my time behind those shipyard gates

And I've sometimes mourned my lot

But if any man tries to mess me about

I will fight like my father fought

SMALL EXCEPTION OF ME

as sung by Seldom Scene (from Dean Martin)

Everybody knows youıre leavinıŠ.me for good,

Everybody tells me nowŠ.they knew you would,

Itıs a well-known secret I just couldnıt see,

And the whole world knew, with the small exception of me

Everybody knows weıve cried ourŠ.final tears,

Everybody knows weıve wastedŠall these years,

And although they said Iıd have to set you free,

And the whole world knew, with the small exception of me

BRIDGE

With the small exception of me, the world is wise,

With the small exception of me, itıs no surprise

INSTRUMENTAL (verse)

So funnyŠthe way that IŠ.could be so blind,

Honey, when itıs out of sight, itıs out of mind,

Now the truth has dawned, and itıs plain enough to see,

That the whole world knew, with the small exception of me

Coda, to sloooow ending

SUICIDE IS PAINLESS

(theme song from MASH)

Mike Altman and Johnny Mandel

Through early morning fog I see

Visions of the things to be,

The pains that are withheld for me

I realize, and I can seeŠŠ

CHORUS:

That suicide is painlessŠ..it brings on many changes

And I can take or leave it if I please

The game of life is hard to play

Iım going to lose it anyway,

The losinı card Iıll someday lay

So this is all I have to sayŠŠ

CHORUS

INSTRUMENTAL BREAK

The only way to win is cheat

And lay it down before Iım beat,

And to another give my seat

For thatıs the only painless featŠŠ

CHORUS

CODA:

And you can do the same thing if you please

The Sinking Of The Reuben James

(Melody- ³Wildwood Flower²)

Instru. Intro.

Have you heard of a ship called the good Reuben James
Manned by hard fighting men both of honor and fame?
She flew the Stars and Stripes of the land of the free
But tonight she's in her grave at the bottom of the sea.

CHORUS:

Tell me what were their names, tell me what were their names,
Did you have a friend on the good Reuben James?
What were their names, tell me, what were their names?
Did you have a friend on the good Reuben James

Well, a hundred men went down in that dark watery grave
When that good ship went down only forty-four were saved
'Twas the last day of October we saved the forty-four
From the cold ocean waters and the cold icy shore.

CHORUS:

INSTRU. BREAK

It was there in the dark of that uncertain night
That we watched for the U-boats and waited for a fight
Then a whine and a rock and a great explosion roared
And they laid the Reuben James on that cold ocean floor.

CHORUS:

INSTRU. BREAK

Now tonight there are lights in our country so bright
In the farms and in the cities they're telling of the fight
And now our mighty battleships will steam the bounding main
And remember the name of that good Reuben James.

CHORUS:

TALKING FISHERMAN

Jack Elliott

I went down to the fishin' hole

Carried along my fishin' pole

Somethin' grabbed my hook, took my bait,

Drug me out in the middle of the lake

Some junk...I got sunk...baptized on credit

Fishin' down in a muddy bank

I felt a pull and I give a big yank

And I jerked out two old rubber boots,

And a Ford radiator and a Chevrolet coupe

Gave 'em to the men from National Defense

You go fishin', I'll tell you what to do-

Just set right down in the grassy dew

Get a piece of string, tie it on a pole,

Throw it out into the middle of the hole

Then just find yourself a good shade tree, lie down, go to sleep....forget all about it

Settin' in the boat with a bucket of beer,

Hadn't caught nothin', didn't much care

Guess I was pretty well satisfied,

I had my little lady right by my side

Takin' it easy....worm been gone off that hook for...couple hours

Stagnant water's a stinkin' thing

Slick on top, and all turned green

When the water goes bad, the fish all run

You can set all day and not catch a one

            'Cept mud-whollopers...gar fish...little bitty suckers

Jumped in the river, went down deep,

There's a hunderd-pound catfish layin' there asleep

Jumped on his back, rode him into town

Saddled him up, and then I turned around

            Folks come a-runnin'...dogs barkin'...kids, lookin'

TALKING FISHERMAN (continued)

I waded out into a sandy bar

And I caught myself a big alligator-gar

I drug him home across my back,

His tail was draggin' a mile and a half

            Sold him for a quarter...got drunk...shot craps...got in jail

Early one mornin' I took me a notion

To go out fishin' in the middle of the ocean

And I caught myself a great big shark

And I didn't get home till waaaay past dark

            He was a man-eater....tough customer...just wasn't quite tough enough

Late last night I had me a dream

I was out fishin' in a whiskey stream

I baited my hook with applejack

I'd throw out a drink, and bring a gallon back

I was doin' pretty good....'till the stream ran dry....so I gave the fish back to the finance company

TALKING WORLD WAR III BLUES

Bob Dylan

One time ago a crazy dream came to me

I dreamt I was walkin' World War three

Went to the doctor the very next day

To see what kind of words he could say,

He said it was a bad dream....

"I wouldn't worry about it none, though......

Them old dreams are only in your head!"

I said, "Hold it, Doc, a world war passed through my brain!"

He said, "Nurse, get your pad, the boy's insane"

He grabbed my arm, I said, "Ouch",

I landed on the psychiatric couch.....

He said, "Tell me all about it, son"

"Well, the whole thing started about three o'clock fast

It was all over by quarter past

I was down in the sewer with some little lover

When I peeked out from a manhole cover.....

Wonderin' who turned all the lights on us

Well I got up and walked around, up and down the lonesome town

I stood wonderin' which way to go,

Lit a cigarette on a parkin' meter

And walked on down the road.....

It was a normal day

Well I rung me a fallout shelter bell,

Leaned my head and I give a yell,

'Gimmee a string bean, I'm a hungry man,'

Shotgun fired and away I ran.......

I don't blame him too much though, he didn't know me

Down the corner by a hotdog stand, I seen a man

I said, 'Howdy friend, I guess it's just us two!'

He screamed a bit and away he flew.......

Thought I was a communist

TALKING WORLD WAR III BLUES (continued)

Well I spied me a girl, before she could leave

I said, 'Let's go play Adam and Eve'

I took her by the hand and my heart was thumpin'

She said, 'Hey man, you crazy or somethin'??....

You seen what happened last time they started!'

I seen me a Cadillac window up town

There was nobody around,

So I got into the driver's seat,

And I drove down forty-second street....

In my Cadillac....good car to drive....after a war

I remembered seeing some ads, so I turned on my Conelrad

But I didn't pay the Con-Ed bill,

So my radio didn't work so well

Turned on my record player.....

It was Rockaday Johnnie singing

"Tell Your Ma, Tell Your Pa...Our Love's a-Gonna Grow, Waa- Waa"

I was feelin' kinda lonesome and blue,

I needed somebody to talk to

So I called up the Operator of Time

Just to hear a voice of some kind......

'When you hear the beep...it will be three o'clock'

She said that for over an hour and I hung up!"

Well the doctor interrupted me just about then

Saying, "Hey, I've been havin' the same old dreams,

But mine was a little different, you see,

I dreamt the only person left after the war was ME!....

I didn't see you around"

Now time passed, and now it seems, everybody's havin' them dreams

Everybody sees his-self walkin' around with no one else...

Half the people can be part right all of the time,

Some of the people can be all right part of the time,

But all the people can't be all right all the time

I think Abraham Lincoln said that....

I'll let you be in my dream if I can be in yours...I said that

TALKING GUITAR BLUES

Cisco Houston

If you want to get in trouble Iıll tell you how to do it

Just get a guitar, and youıre into it

Practice all day and half the night...

Folks tell you you never will get it right

Theyıre always fussinı at you....grousinı....wonıt let ya practice....

Tryinı to drive you out into the henhouse

I got me a guitar a year ago

The man said I could learn to play in a week or so

He give me a book and a pick or two

He said, ³There it is, Bud, itıs up to you²

That dirty dog....charged me four-ninety-five...every cent of money I had...

            Cotton-pickinı money, too!

Since Iıd already spent my dough,

I didnıt want it to go to waste, you know

So I took the book and the picks and all

Went back home where the grass grows tall

Back there in Virginia...good place to be if you got a guitar....

Donıt amount to a great deal if you ainıt!

Well, I labored very hard

Just to try and learn those few main chords

My book said it was as easy as A-B-C,

But, Oh, my fingers is a-killinı me

Got sore on the ends...couldnıt mash the strings down...felt disgusted...

            Frustrated......and deeeeejected

I practiced hard, both night and day,

I could see Maıs hair a-turninı gray

Her face was lined with discontent

She said her patience was darn-near spent

            She was agitated....nervous...

            Wanted to scream

My sister, she took it the worst of all

Cause she got married that cominı fall

She said it was love, but I got my doubts,

I think my guitar drove her out

Sheıs a game gal, just couldnıt take it...said there was a limit to             everything.....

            Even beautiful music!

TALKING GUITAR BLUES (continued)

My Dad, he took it in a different way,

He said, ³Son, you may turn your Maıs hair gray,

And drive your sister from her home,

But either you or me is a-goinı roaminı.....

And I ainıt leavinı, Boy!....You figure it out....²

            Well, I did.....kinda quick

So, the next day after my clothes was packed

I slung that guitar on my back

And caught the end of a long, gray train

To search this world for my share of fame...

But I ainıt found any...nothinı but hard ships, hard knocks...

            And handouts!

TALKING VIETNAM POT-LUCK BLUES

Tom Paxton

Well, when I landed in Vietnam

I hardly got to see Saigon

They shaped us up and called the roll,

And off we went on a long patrol

Swappinı liesŠ..swattinı fliesŠ

Firinı off the odd shot here and there

The Captain called a halt one night

And we had chow by the pale moonlight

A lovely dinner they planned for us,

With a taste like a seat on a cross-town bus

Some of the veterans just left theirs layinı in the can for the VC to findŠ

Said it was deadlier than a land mine

Well naturally somebody told a joke,

And a couple of fellows began to smoke

I took a whiff as a cloud rolled by

And my nose went up like an infield fly

CaptianŠheıs a blonde fellowŠwent to YaleŠlooked up at me and said,

³Uhh, whatısamatter wichyoo, baby??²

³Well, I may be crazy, but I think not,

I swear to God that I smell pot!!

But whoıd have pot in Vietnam??²

He said, ³Whaddaya think you been sittinı on??

HereŠ..these funny little plantsв

Good God Almighty!Š.Pastures of Plenty!!

So we all lit up, and by and by

The whole platoon was flyinı high

With a beautiful smile on the Captainıs face,

He smelled like midnight on St. Markıs Place

Crackinı jokesŠcleaning his weaponŠ

Chanting something about Hari Krishna, Hari Krishna

Well, the moment came, as it comes to all,

That I had to answer natureıs call

I was stumbling around in a beautiful haze

When I met a little cat in black pjs

He had a rifleŠBF Goodrich sandalsŠ.

He looked up at me and said,Š ³Uhh, whatısamatter wichyoo, baby??²

TALKING VIETNAM POT-LUCK BLUES (continued)

He said, ³Weıre camping down the pass,

And smelled you people blowing grass

And since, by the smell, youıre smoking trash,

I brought you a taste of a special stash

Straight from Uncle Hoıs Victory GardenŠ.

We call it Hanoi Gold!²

So his squad and my squad settled down

And passed some lovely stuff around

All too soon it was time to go,

The Captain got on the radio,

He said, ³Hello HeadquartersŠŠ..

Headquarters, we have met the enemy, and they have been smashed.²

TALKING DUST BOWL BLUES

Woody Guthrie

Back in 1927

I had a little farm, and I called it heaven

When the price was up and the rain came down

I hauled my crops all into town and got the money,

Bought clothes and groceriesŠ.

Raised me a family

The rain quit and the wind got high,

And a black old dust storm filled the sky,

So I swapped my farm for a Ford machine

And poured it full of this gas-i-lene, and startedŠ

Rockinı and a-rollinı, out of the old Dust Bowl into the old Peach BowlŠ.

California!!!

Way up yonder on a mountain road

I had a hot motor and a heavy load

I was goinı pretty fast, wasnıt even stoppinı

Just a-bouncinı up and down like popcorn poppinıŠI had a breakdown

Sort of a nervous breakdownŠthere was a mechanic feller thereŠ

He charged me thirteen dollarsŠsaid it was Œen-gine troubleı

Way up yonder on a mountain curve

Way high up in a piney wood,

I give that rollinı Ford a shove

And I was gonna coast as fur as I could

Commenced a-rollinıŠ.pickinı up speedŠand there was a hairpin turnŠ

And IŠ.didnıt make it!

Man alive, Iım tellinı you,

The fiddles and guitars really flew

That Ford took off like a flyinı squirrel

And flew halfway Œround the world

Scattered wives and childrenŠŠ

All over this side of that mountain

We got out to California, broke

So dad-gum hungry I thought Iıd croak,

And I bummed up a spud or two

My wife fixed up a tater stew

We poured the kids a big bate of it

Man alive, Iım tellinı you,

That surely was a mighty thin stew

So very thin, I really mean,

You could read a magazineŠright through it

See purty picturesŠwhiskey bottlesŠ.naked women

I always have figured if that stewıd been just a little bit thinnerŠ.some of our politicians couldıve seen through it!

TALKING NEW YORK

Bob Dylan

Ramblinı out of the wild west, leavinı the towns I love the best

Thought Iıd seen some ups and downs Œtil I come into New York town

People goinı down the the groundŠ.. buildinıs goinı up to the sky

I swung onto my old guitar, grabbed hold of a subway car,

I was rockinı and reelinı and rollinı around, landed up on the downtown side

Green-witch Village

I walked down there and ended up in one of them coffee-houses on the block

Tried to get on stage, sing and play, the man there said, ³Come back some other dayŠ

You sound like a hillbillyŠ..we want Folk Singers here!!²

Winter time in New York town, the wind blowinı the snow around,

Walk around with no place to go, somebody could freeze right to the bone

I froze right to the boneŠ..

Š.New York town, they said it was the coldest winter in seventeen years!Š.I didnıt feel so cold, then

Well I got a harmonica job, gotta play, blowinı my lungs out for a dollar a day

I blow it inside out and upside down, the man there said he loved my sound

Heıs ravinı about it, he loved my soundŠ..dollar a dayıs worth

After weeks and weeks of hanginı around I finally got a job in New York town

In a bigger place, bigger money too, even joined the union, and paid my dues!

Now a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen

It donıt take too long to find out just what he was talkinı about

Lotta people donıt have much food on their tables, but they got a lotta forks, and knives,

AndŠ.they gotta cut somethinı

So one morninı when the sun was warm I rambled out of New York town

Pulled my cap down over my eyes, and headed out for western skies

So long New YorkŠŠ..howdy, East Orange!

TOMORROW IS A LONG LONG TIME

Bob Dylan

If today was not an endless highway

If tonight was not a crooked trail

If tomorrow wasn't such a long time

Then lonesome would mean nothing to me at all

CHORUS:

Yes and only if my own true love was waitin'

And if I could hear her heart a-softly poundin'

Only if she was lyin' by me

Would I lie in my bed....once again

I can't see my reflection in the water

I can't feel the sounds that know no pain

I can't hear the echo of my footsteps

Can't remember the sound of my own name

CHORUS:

There's beauty in the silver singin' river

There's beauty in the sunlight in the skies

But none of these and nothing else can match the beauty

That I remember in my true love's eyes

CHORUS:

THATıS WHEN YOUR HEARTACHES BEGIN

as sung by Elvis

If you find your sweetheart in the arms of a friend

Thatıs when your heartaches begin

When dreams of a lifetime must come to an end

Thatıs when your heartaches begin

Love is a thing you never can share,

When you bring a friend into your love affair

Thatıs-a the end of your sweetheart, thatıs the end of your friend

Thatıs when your heartaches begin

(SPOKEN AS MELODY IS PLAYED):

If you find your sweetheartŠ in the arms of your best friend

ThatısŠ. thatıs when your heartachesŠ.begin

And you know when all your dreams, when all your dreams of a lifetime mustŠ must all come to an end

Yeah, thatısŠthatıs when your heartaches begin

For you see, loveŠ. is a thingŠ that youŠ.never can share,

And you know when you bring a friendŠ when you bring a friend.ŠintoŠ. your love affair

(SINGING):

Thatıs-a the end of your sweetheart, thatıs the end of your friend

Thatıs when your heartaches begin

TRAVELINı MAN

as sung by Ricky Nelson

Iım a travelinı man, made a lot of stops

All over the world,

And in every port I own the heart

Of at least one lovely girl

Thereıs a pretty senorita waitinı for me

Down in old Mexico,

If youıre ever in Alaska stop and see

My cute little Eskimo

CHORUS:

Oh my sweet fraulein down in Berlin town

Makes my heart start to yearn

And my China doll down in old Hong Kong

Waits for my return

Pretty Polynesian baby, over the sea,

I remember the night

When we walked in the sands of Waikiki

And I held you oh-so-tight

BREAK

CHORUS:

Š.Oh Iım a travelinı manŠ.yeah, Iım a travelinı manŠ.

Š.Oh Iım a travelinı man

THERE BUT FOR FORTUNE

Phil Ochs, as sung by Joan Baez

Key of G

Show me the prison, show me the jail

Show me the prisoner whose life has gone stale

And Iıll show you a young man, with so many reasons why

There but for fortune go you or I....you or I

Show me the alley, show me the train

Show me the hobo who sleeps out in the rain

And Iıll show you a young man, with so many reasons why

There but for fortune go you or I....you or I

Show me the whiskey stains on the floor

Show me the drunkard as he stumbles out the door

And Iıll show you a young man, with so many reasons why

There but for fortune go you or I....you or I

Show me the country where the bombs had to fall

Show me the ruins of the buildings once so tall

And Iıll show you a young land, with so many reasons why

There but for fortune go you or I....you or I

THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND

WOODY GUTHRIE

CHORUS:

This land is your land, this land is my land

From California to the New York island

From the redwood forests to the Gulf-stream waters

This land was made for you and me

As I was walking that ribbon of highway

I saw above me that endless skyway

I saw below me that golden valley

This land was made for you and me

CHORUS

I roamed and rambled, and I followed my footsteps

To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts

And all around me a voice was sounding

This land was made for you and me

CHORUS

The sun came shining and I was strolling

The wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling

As the fog was lifting a voice was calling

This land was made for you and me

CHORUS

THOSE WERE THE DAYS

Once upon a time there was a tavern, where we used to raise

            a glass or two

Remember how we laughed away the hours, and dreamed of all the great things

            we would do

CHORUS:    Those were the days, my friend, we thought theyıd never end

Weıd sing and dance forever and a day

Weıd live the life we choose, weıd fight and never lose,

For we were young and sure to have our way

                        La-la-la la-la-la, La-la-la la-la-la,

Those were the days, oh yes, those were the days

Then the busy years went rushing by us

We lost our starry notions on the way

If by chance Iıd see you in the tavern

Weıd smile at one another and weıd say

CHORUS:

Just tonight I stood before the tavern

Nothing seemed the way it used to be

In the glass I saw a strange reflection

Was that lonely stranger really me?

CHORUS:

Through the door there came familiar laughter

I saw your face, I heard you call my name

Oh, my friend, weıre older, but no wiser,

For in our hearts the dreams are still the same

CHORUS:                                                                                        Gene Raskin, 1962

Thatıs What You Get

Gordon Lightfoot

(Instru. intro.)- one line

CHORUS:

Thatıs what you get for lovinı me,

Thatıs what you get for lovinı meeeeee...

Everything you had is gone, as you can see,

Thatıs what you get for lovinı me

Iım not the kind to hang around

With every true love I have found,

Movinı is my stock in trade... Iım movinı on,

I wonıt think of you when Iım gone

CHORUS:

INSTRUMENTAL

Now there you go, youıre cryinı again

Now there you go, youıre cryinı agaaaaiiin,

But some day when your poor heart... is on the mend

I just might pass this way again

CHORUS:

TELL ME BABY NOW WHYŠ.

As sung by Clarence and Roland

Every time it rains, Lord I run to my window,

All I do is just wring my hands and moan,

And listen to that thunder roll, canıt you hear that lonesome wind moan?

Tell me baby now why you been gone so long

CHORUS:

Tell me baby now why you been gone so long, you been gone so long now

Tell me baby now why you been gone so long

A wolf is scratchinı at my door, Lord, Lord, I can hear that lonesome wind moan

Tell me baby now why you been gone so long

Somebody said they thought they saw you roarinı down in Reno

With a big old man from San Antone

They tell me Iım a fool to pine for you, oh what do they know,

Tell me baby now why you been gone so long

CHORUS

Ainıt nothing I wanna do, Lord, so I guess I could get stoned,

And let the past paint pictures in my head

And kill a fifth of Thunderbird, and try to write a sad, sad song

Tell me baby now why you been gone so long

CHORUS

The Train Carrying Jimmie Rodgers Home

Come along my dearŠ.the time is drawin' near

We'll have to walkŠdown where the field is overgrown

Consumption has claimed his lifeŠand we dare not miss the sight

Of the trainŠcarrying Jimmie Rodgers home

Weıve had some hard timesŠ.these past few years,

Buck Owens (as sung by Emmy Lou)

Together againŠ my tears have stopped falling,

The long, lonely nightsŠ. are now at an end

The key to my heartŠ. you hold in your hand,

And nothing else mattersŠ.ıcause weıre together again

Together againŠ.. the grey skies are gone,

It takes all night 'till the break of day

Fiddler hollered "do-se-do",

Knew Uncle Pen was ready to go

High on a hill up above the town (STOP)

Uncle Pen played the fiddle, Lordy how it ring,

You could hear it talk, you could hear it sing (L.FLATT RUN)

And he played one called "Boston Boy"

The greatest of all was "Jenny Lind",

To me that's where the fiddle begins

THE UNICORN SONG

Irish Rovers, written by Shel Silverstein

A long time ago, when the earth was green

There was more kinds of animals than you've ever seen

They'd run around free while the earth was being born

And the loveliest of all was the unicorn

CHORUS:

There was green alligators and long-necked geese,

Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees,

Cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born,

The loveliest of all was the unicorn

The Lord seen some sinnin', and it gave him pain,

And He says, "Stand back, I'm gonna make it rainŠ.

Hey, Mr. Noah, I'll tell you what to do,

Build me a floatin' zooŠ..and take some of thoseŠ

Green alligators and long-necked geese,

Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees,

Cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born,

Don't you forget my unicorn!"

Old Noah was there Što answer the call

He finished up makin' the ark just as the rain started to fall

He marched in the animals two-by-two,

And he called out as they came throughŠ.."Hey Lord,

I got Your green alligators and long-necked geese,

Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees,

Cats and rats and elephants, but Lord I'm so forlorn,

I just can't find no unicorns"

Now Noah looked out through the driving rain,

And them unicorns were hiding, playin' silly games

Kickin' and a-splashin' while the rain was falling down

Oh, them silly unicorns

There was green alligators and long-necked geese,

Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees,

Noah cried, "Close the door, for the rain's a-comin' in,

We just can't wait for no unicorns!"

Now the ark started movin', and it drifted with the tide,

The unicorns looked up from the rocks and they cried,

And the waters came down and sort of floated them away,

And that's why you never see unicorns to this very day

You'll see green alligators and long-necked geese,

Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees,

Cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born,

You're never gonna see no u-ni-corns!

UP ON THE ROOF

When this old world starts aıgetting me down

And people are just too much..... for me to face

I want to climb way up to the top of the stairs

And all my cares they drift...... right into space

Oh, on the roof itıs peaceful as can be

And there the world below....it donıt bother me

When I come home feelinı tired and weak

I go up where the air...... is fresh and sweet

Out far away from the hustle and crowds

And all that rat-race noise...... down in the street

On the roof, thatıs the only place I know

Where you just have to wish to make it so

                        Letıs go....up on the roof

(In-between instrumental)

At night the stars they put on a show for free

And darlinı you can share it all with me.....

I keep a-tellinı you, right smack dab in the middle of town

I found a paradise...... thatıs trouble-proof

And if this old world is a-gettinı you down

Thereıs room enough for two.....up on the roof

Up on the roof.......up on the roof........

(Vamps a lot)

My sister takes in laundry while the baby balls a jack

And it donıt look like Iıll ever stop my wanderinı

Snakes in the ocean, eels in the sea,

I let a red-headed woman make a fool outaı me

And it donıt look like Iıll ever stop my wanderinı

From the New York City to the Golden Gate

WILLIN'

Lowell George, as sung by Gene Parsons

I been whooped by the rain, driven by the snow

Well I'm drunk and dirty, and don't you know

I'm still...still willin'

I'm out on the road most every night

I see my pretty Alice in every headlight

Alice.....Dallas Alice

CHORUS:

I've been from Tucson to Tucumcarey,

            Tehachapi to Tonopah

Driven every kind of rig that's ever been made,

Driven the back roads so I won't get weighed

And if you give me weed, whites, and wine

Show me a sign, and I'll be willin'...to be movin'

I've been beaten by the wind, robbed by the sleet,

Had my head stove-in, and I'm still on my feet

And I'm willin'.....to be movin'

And I smuggled some smoke for folks in Mexico

Baked by the sun, every time I go to Mexico

I'm still willin'

CHORUS

WE NEED A WHOLE LOT MORE OF JESUS

Well, you can read it in the morning papers

Hear it on the radio

How crime is sweeping our nation

This world is about to go

We need a good old case of salvation

To keep the love of God in our souls

CHORUS:

We need a whole lot more of Jesus

And a lot less rock 'n' roll

We need more old-time camp meetings

And a lot more prayers and faith

Prayers that can move a mountain

Save our souls from a burning waste

We need a nation-wide revival

To put the love of God in our souls

CHORUS:

We need more old-fashion preachers

Pourin' out their hearts in prayer

When you're in their presence

You know that the Lord is there

We need a good old case of salvation

To keep the love of God in our souls

CHORUS:

We need a whole lot more of Jesus

And a lot less rock 'n' roll

WILL THERE BE ANY FREIGHT TRAINS IN HEAVEN?

Jimmie Rogers

Last night as I lay on the boxcar,

Waiting for a train to pass by,

What will become of the hobo

Whenever his time comes to die?

There's a master up yonder in Heaven,

Got a place that we might call our home...

Will we have to work for a living,

Or can we continue to roam?

CHORUS:

Will there be any freight trains in Heaven,

Any boxcars in which we might hide?

Will there be any tough cops or brakemen,

Will they tell us that we cannot ride?

Will the hobo chum with the rich man,

Will we all have some money to spare?

Will they have respect for the hobo,

In that land that lies hidden up there?

INSTRUMENTAL (verse)

CHORUS:

THE WATER IS WIDE

(James Taylor version- in D)

The water is wide, I can't cross o'er

And neither have I wings to fly

Give me a boat that can carry two

And both shall row, my love and I

Oh, love is gentle, love is kind

The sweetest flower, when first it's new

But love grows old, and waxes cold

And fades away, like mornin' dew

Hum one verse

There is a ship, and she sails the sea

She's loaded deep, as deep can be

But not as deep as the love I'm in

I know not how I sink or swim

Repeat First verse

Wild Horses

Jagger-Richards, as sung by Old & In the Way

You know I canıt let you, slide through my hands

CHORUS:

Wild horses, couldnıt drag me away

Wild, wild horses, weıll ride them some day

Now youıve decided, to show me the same

No sweeping exits, or off-stage lines

Could make me feel bitter, or treat you unkind

CHORUS:

BREAK:  1st half verse- Stan mandolin/ 2nd half verse- Marty harmonica

Letıs do some living, after we die

WHEN I PAINT MY MASTERPIECE

Bob Dylan

Oh the streets of Rome are filled with rubble

Ancient footprints are everywhere

You can almost think that you're seeing double

On a cold dark night on a Spanish stair

Got to hurry on back to my hotel room

Where I got me a date with a pretty young girl from Greece

She promised that she'd be there with me

When I paint my masterpiece

Oh the hours that I spent inside the Coliseum

Dodging lions and just wasting time

Oh the mighty kings of the jungle, I can hardly stand to see 'em

Yeah it sure has been a long hard climb

Train wheels running through the back of my memory

Where I ran on a hillside following a flock of wild geese

Some day everythingıs gonna be different

When I paint my masterpiece

I left Rome and landed in Brussels

On a plane ride so bumpy that I almost cried

Clergymen in uniform and young girls pulling muscles

Everyone was there to greet me when I stepped inside

Newspapermen eating candy

Had to be held down by big police

Some day everything is gonna be smooth like a rhapsody

When I paint my masterpiece

WILD COLONIAL BOY

There was a wild colonial boy, Jack Duggan was his name

Born and bred in Ireland, in a place called Castlemaine

He was his fatherıs only son, his motherıs pride and joy

And dearly did his parents love the wild colonial boy

At the tender age of sixteen years he left his native home

And to Australiaıs sunny shores he was inclined to roam

He robbed the rich to help the poor, he shot James MacElroy

A terror to Australia was the wild colonial boy

One day out on the prairie, as Jack, he rode along

A-listeninı to the mockingbird, and humminı a solemn song

Up stepped a band of troupers, Kelly, Davis, and Fitzroy,

They all set out to capture him, the wild colonial boy

Surrender now, Jack Duggan, for you see weıre three to one

Surrender in the queenıs high name, you are a plunıdring son

Jack drew two pistols from his from his hip, and boldly waved them high

³Iıll fight, but not surrender!² cried the wild colonial boy

He fired a shot at Kelly, which brought him to the ground,

And turning Œround to Davis, he received a fatal wound

A bullet pierced his brave young heart, from the rifle of Fitzroy

And that was how they captured him, the wild colonial boy

And that was how they captured him, the wild colonial boy

WILD ROVER

CHORUS:

For it's no, nay, neverŠŠ ah nay never no more,

And I'll play the wild roverŠ never no more

But now I'm returning with gold in great store

And I never will play the wild rover no more

CHORUS:

I went into an alehouse I used to frequent

And I told the landlady me money was spent

I asked her for credit, she answered me, "Nay!"

Sayin', "Customers like you I can get any day!!"

CHORUS:

I took from my pocket ten sovereigns bright,

And the landlady's eyes opened wide with delight

She said, "I have whiskey and wines of the best,

And the words that I told you were only in jest!"

CHORUS:

I'll go back to my parents, confess what I've done,

And I'll ask them to forgive their prodigal son

And when they've caressed me, like oft-times before,

Sure I never will play the wild rover no more!

Her eyes shined like the stars at night

And her hair was dark and it was curly

Iıll love her Œtil the day I die

WHITE DOVE

Stanley Bros., as sung by Old & In The Way

Thereıs a place I love so well

Where I spent many days of my childhood

In the cabin where the loved children dwell

CHORUS:

White dove will mourn in sorrow

The willow will hang their head

I live my life in sorrow

Since Mother and Daddy are dead

We were all so happy there together

In our peaceful little mountain home

But the Savior need angels up in Heaven

Now they sing around the great white throne

CHORUS

As the years roll by Iıve often wondered

Will we all be together some day?

And each night as I wander through the graveyard

Darkness finds me where I kneel to pray

CHORUS

Will the Circle Be Unbroken

(Traditional)

Chorus:

Will the circle be unbroken, by-and-by, Lord, by-and-by?

There's a better home awaiting-in the sky, Lord, in the sky

I was standing by my window on one cold and cloudy day

When I saw that hearse come rolling for to take my mother away

Chorus

Undertaker, undertaker, undertaker please drive slow

For the body that you're a-carrying, Lord, I hate to see her go

Chorus

Well I followed close behind her, tried to hold up and be brave

All my brothers, sisters crying-what a home so sad and alone

Who Will Watch the Home Place?

as sung by Laurie Lewis

Leaves are falling, and turning to showers of gold

As the postman climbs up our long hill

And thereıs sympathy written all over his face

As he hands me a couple more bills

CHORUS:

Who will watch the home place,

Who will tend my heartıs dear space,

And who will fill my empty place,

When I am gone from here?

Thereıs a lovely green nook by a clear-running stream,

It was my place when I was quite small,

And its creatures and sounds could soothe my worst pains

But today they donıt ease me at all

CHORUS

In my grandfatherıs shed there are hundreds of tools

I know them by feel and by name,

And like parts of my body, theyıve patched this old place

When I move them they wonıt be the same

Now I wander around touching each blessed thing

The chimney, the tables, the trees,

And my memories swirl Œround me like birds on the wing,

When I leave here, oh who will I be?

CHORUS
